Browsing on a mobile device?

#1 Post by ToniXX »

How many of you use this forum on a mobile device? I'm asking because I've found a method that detects if you're on a mobile device and displays the forums in a mobile-friendly theme. It makes reading them considerably easier, as you don't have to zoom in. Is that something you'd like to see implemented here?

I will read PMs and thread updates on my phone if I'm away from my computer, but I usually wait until I get back home and compose any replies from my computer. I'd say that I use this site from a mobile device about 30% of the time.

Do you do all of your browsing here on a mobile device or just some of it? What are your thoughts about a mobile-enabled theme?

Your input is greatly appreciated!

I check in from my Android device pretty much throughout the day, so I would be in favor of anything that made the site more mobile-friendly.

Lately I do a lot of reading on my phone but not as much posting because I hate my autocorrect.

I read/post Almost exclusively on my Galaxy S3. I like the control of desktop mode on dang near every website I use and almost always avoid mobile versions. However, if you can implement all the same features as desktop version in a more compatible mobile version...I'll give it a go. Just hate to see you do the work if most people are like me in this.

I currently don't use on mobile because my eyes are getting old along with the rest of me.

I use the forum on a mobile device about half of the time.

Any improvement are greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Good input so far. Some things to note:
  • It's surprisingly easy to implement this on my end. Took about five minutes on my other forums.
  • At the bottom of every page there is a link to switch to full site or back to mobile, depending on what you're currently looking at. And once you've made the switch, it seems to remember your choice the next time you return to the site. So, if you don't like the mobile version, you can continue to use the full site on your mobile device.

I've implemented this change. As easy as it was for me to set up, it's easy to roll back. I can also change the colors. In the mobile version, red indicates that the topic is un-read.

I just checked in from my phone for the first time and was like "What?"

It's definitely much easier to navigate, but I miss having the formatting buttons at the top of the post you're composing. And come to think of it, it wasn't obvious how to reply to a message (I found the option as the last choice the gear menu).

It'll take some getting used to, and may not be a better option (depending upon what you're trying to do with your session), but it's better to have the option than not.

Thanks, Greg.

I agree that it's not totally great for making posts... but if you're just reading it's not bad.

It's definitely a very different look. The color scheme is a bit...jarring. :) Especially the red for unread. But the text size is much better on a phone.

One thing I noticed just now: if you're writing a post, the "Switch to full style" button takes you back to the thread, abandoning the post you're editing. Is there any way to change that so a person could switch styles while editing (e.g., to get the formatting buttons)?

Also: is there a "View your posts" link anywhere in the mobile interface?

I don't think there's a way of changing that. At least not anything that I can do about it. You'd have to be mindful to switch to full before you start to post, I guess.

Touch the little gear icon on the top right. Correction: touch the little spy glass on the top right.

I don't see it listed there. Here's what I see on the gear menu:

Ninja edit! ;)
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

I guess I accidentally tapped on the Switch To Mobile a Style link as I was shutting down my browser this morning on my iPad.

Freaked my s#!+ when I just opened it again and it was all pink and white stripes.

It's OK now. Don't worry.
