EPISODE FIVE: THE JEWEL OF SUMATRA

#1 Post by max_vale »

Late afternoon; October 3rd, 1937; the island of Sipora, Sumatra

The three pilots, hugging each other and laughing at their survival of the tomb of Tapatamani collapsing on top of them WITH the massive emerald in hand were suddenly snapped back to the here-and-now by the sound of a man clearing his throat primly. Turning around, they noticed the familiar sight of Captain von Hoffstahl, in a somewhat rumpled and dirty SS uniform and three other men, all armed and standing in a loose semi-circle about 5 or 6 yards away from them and near the tree line of the jungle clearing.

The German Captain had obtained another Lugar pistol from someone; probably the nondescript Krieger to his left who has a Bergman SMG cradled in his arms and the other 2 men were German soldiers in uniform and leveling Mauser Bolt-action rifles at the 3 pilots. In a tight voice, von Hoffstahl ordered them; "You vill handz over ze Jewel and drop your veapons!"; gesturing to the Bergman dangling over Jean-Claude's shoulder on its strap and the Lugar in Nikolai's belt. Murdoch happened to notice some movement in the tree line just behind one of the German soldiers...

The unmistakable sight of yellow and black stripes revealed a massive Sumatran tiger right before it suddenly pounced and drove one of the poor German soldiers face-first into the ground hard and all of the other Germans turned at the sight and sound and suddenly pandemonium exploded in the early evening jungle air....

GO Now!

Jean Claude runs to the left, not staying to watch the bloodshed. He'll lead a zig-zag path away from the temple and toward the shoreline.

Murdoch bolts after Jean-Claude, right on his heels.

Nikolai is thrown for a loop when Jean-Claude, not Murdoch, bolts for the shore. After a split second he wisely follows behind.

The distraction caused by the tiger's choice of a German guard for dinner led to all of the pilots deciding to make a run for it. As they began to run towards the shore-line the sounds of a Bergman being fired echoed to thier ears, along with the sounds of a large animal roaring in pain. Of more immediate interest to the pilots however was the crack of a rifle-shot and the distinctive sound of a Lugar pistol firing in thier direction….

The Rifle shot slammed into a tree-trunk barely half-a-foot from Nikolai's shoulder while the Lugar bullet zipped close enough to Jean-Claude to actually nick his skin* and leaving a terrible ringing in the bloodied ear as the Nazi Captain yelled out some obscenties in German that the pilots were rather surprised to hear from a man who tried to carry himself as a prim-and-proper type.

Looking over thier shoulders, they could see that one of the German soldiers, working the bolt of his Rifle to chamber another round, along with von Hoffstahl aiming his Lugar had chased them while Krieger had turned to deal with the Tiger that had chomped down on the last unfortunate German soldier. While it was anyone's guess what ran through Murdoch's mind; Nikolai and Jean-Claude both knew that at less than 30 yards distance; continuing to run would just make them target practice for the Nazi troops. Oulette could feel the Bergman submachinegun, dangling on its strap as it light bounced on the back of his shoulder and arm while Klokov almost subconsciously took a grip on the Lugar pistol in his belt….

*Jean-Claude was grazed….I rolled a Higher STR result than the damage for the Pistol….very lucky!

Jean-Claude dives for cover behind a convenient log and preps to fire on the Germans. When he fires, he'll try to maintain short bursts, directed first at the rifleman.

If Murdoch can find another piece of cover, he'll jump behind it too. (Preferably a different location than the one Jean-Claude already found).

((OOC: Does Murdoch have a gun? If so, he'll start returning fire))

(OOC: No, Murdoch doesn't have a gun at this point....I forget where he lost it....probably when captured?...but there ARE numerous branches and probably some rocks near by that could serve as make-shift weapons)

In that case, Murdoch will simply look for cover. He'll grab a fist-sized rock or a stout branch if he can find one nearby, to be used if needed.

Nikolai squeezes into slight cover behind a tree and returns fire, focusing on Von Hoffstahl.

"Can't we talk about this Hoffstahl? You seem like the resonable man."

Late afternoon; October 3rd, 1937; the island of Sipora, Sumatra

Murdoch surreptiously snatches a heavy rock as he crouches down in a copse of thick, leafy plants at the base of a pair of trees just at the edge of the 'tree-line' before reaching the beach. He does his best to ignore the bug bites as he concentrates on the battle going on around him....

Nikolai Klokov exchanges a few words with Von Hoffstahl while squeezing the trigger of his aquired Lugar pistol and he puts a round high into the chest of the Nazi officer. The German officer freezes for a moment before slowly collapsing forward and down onto the half-grassy; half-sandy floor which denoted where the beach and the jungle meet...

Jean-Claude pops up on his knees behind the log he dove behind and cuts loose a pair of bursts from his Bergmann submachinegun; watching with satisfaction as the rounds slam into the German Rifleman and snatch him off his feet; leaving him unmoving on the ground...

The three pilots blink at the sudden silence and seeing thier foes not moving, they dare to look at each other and a grin starts to form on thier faces; right before the crazed sight of the nondescript Nazi spy Krieger bursts into the area with half of his clothes bloodied and shredded, presumably from the Tiger and wielding a Bergman SMG in his hands....

He screams curses in German as he sprays a long arc of fire that manages to put a round into Jean-Claude's left fore-arm and another into Klokov's beefy right shoulder*. Both men wince in pain and thier weapons are knocked out of line-of-sight due to the wounds; at which sight a terrible smile comes over the crazed Krieger's face. No doubt a lecture about the superiority of the Nazi cause was about to spew forth from his lips, but at that moment, with uncanny aim; Murdoch heaved the rock he still held in his hand. The blunt object slammed with full force into the Nazi's face; smashing his nose into a bloody pulp and causing his eyes to roll in towards each other and the man dropped like a puppet with its strings cut. All was suddenly quiet....

A droning sound soon washed over the Pilots' ears and with painful turns of thier heads they watched Liu Zang set down his 'Dauphin' floatplane just off the coast, and soon his rear seat gunner, Bobby King, was jumping into the surf with a small inflatable raft and making his way towards them. Of the German planes, there was no sign.....so it looked like Thunderbolt squadron had won the day...

"Ah, Murdoch, we can always count on you to do the unconventional. Many thanks and congrats to you both."

Nikolai will grab the guns, and pilfer through Von Hoffstahl's belongings, then head toward the raft.

Murdoch performs a bow with an elaborate flourish ending with a curtsey, then follows Jean-Claude in the direction of the plane as if on a Sunday stroll at a tropic resort.
