Inferno wrote:What I've been doing is using Dex to determine the order of melee within a side. So Telkis always goes before Grothnak, for example.

You might be right. I suppose I could subtract weapon speed from Dex. (or maybe Dex - weapon speed + level?) As long as PCs didn't switch their weapons too often, it shouldn't be too hard.

But, except when there's a tie in Initiative, this would just determine who strikes first among the party's melee fighters.
Out of curiosity, I crunched some numbers:

Melee order determined by Dex only:
Hoom: 19
Telkis: 18
Mouser: 17
Urdur: 17
Bo: 15
Pip: 15
Grothnak:13
Ingrid: 13
Brevos: 10
Pelias: 9

Melee order determined by Dex - Weapon Speed + Level + Movement + Magical weapon bonus, if any:
Urdur, dagger: 30
Hoom, dagger: 29
Pip, quarterstaff: 29
Hoom, short sword: 28
Mouser, Cat's Claw: 27
Mouser, Scalpel: 25
Telkis, Cranach: 23
Bo, spear: 21
Brevos, Brood: 17
Grothnak, Vadok: 16
Ingrid, mace: 16
Pelias, Avril's sword: 14

Hey, Inferno.
I tried to look for my previous level up hp rolls for Telkis, but for some reason my roll history only goes back 24 rolls. Which is odd since the link says "see all rolls for this character." As I recall, when leveling up to 2nd and 3rd level, Telkis had very good luck on his hp rolls, giving him 28 out of a possible 30 max, but I can't confirm since I can't see the rolls. Are you saying he shouldn't have that many hp? Even though we went "by the book" with the rolls - including the hp reduction? (I assume this was by the book.)

I couldn't find the roll history either. It seems the US dice roller doesn't go back indefinitely. Which is why I had to ask for the new d10 roll to reduce his HP.

After pondering its result, I'm allowing Telkis to have more than 20 hit points even though he's a 2nd level fighter with no Con bonuses for HP.

Rule-wise: The dice are the dice.

Game-wise: Telkis is hardened by this ghastly experience.

Hey,
Just a heads up: I'm away for work for a few days. So if I'm quiet you know why. I might be able to get online. Don't know yet.
Either way, I'm back on Wednesday.

Ah, got it. For what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure I rolled an 8 last time I leveled up, so we could subtract that many instead of just 2 if you want. I’m good either way.

Grothnak and Ingrid both successfully hit with their new magical weapons and now understand more about them.

Grothnak's iron halberd of unknown origins: (+2, +3 vs Evil)

Ingrid's mace from a dwarvish forge: (+2, +3 vs Undead)

I've updated the Treasure thread. Please update your character sheets. Thanks.

Soooooo.... anyone else having s hard time balancing the meta-gaming desire to not behave aggressively towards another player and behaving, in character, as your character would logically behave? I’m having a hard time with this. :( :)

Maybe I just need to stop being a wuss and toughen up. :)

Anyway, just want to be absolutely clear that in RL I have no desire to get under anyone’s skin with my character’s “tough talk.” I’m sure everybody knows that. Bleh...

Nah - no worries :). I never take an in-game conflict as anything but RP. What fun would be if it was always rosey and easy? Makes for good drama :)

This is one of my favorite games on here because of the gritty interaction. Feels more realistic when you really think about 9 sorry bastards slogging around through mud and guts. :D

I hope nobody would take something like that too seriously.

I think it's always a good idea to make sure that nobody's taking anything personally, but I actually think the game is more interesting when there is interparty conflict. Not fighting (usually), but I find the current situation very interesting. Pelias hasn't trusted Mouser in a long time, and finds both he and Hoom completely dishonorable.

But in real life I'm sure DadsAngry and raven are true mensches!

Agree with what has already been said: Characters arguing can sometimes be wonderful fun. Players arguing isn't. :)

My respect and affection for this little 28 page module grows every year. Published in 1982, it challenges some well-entrenched player meta tropes: the town is always safe, the town isn't the adventure, always trust the other PCs, etc.
