Grothnak nods as he wipes black blood off of Vadok's blade. "On to the next horror," he says.

Beneath the Church of Merikka (21)
Village of Briarsgate, Gran March, Greyhawk
Day Eight. After midnight. Sunday, October 23nd, 576 CY
Cloudy, damp, cold, misty

The unspeakable, shrieking horror lies dead.

The heroes gird themselves to delve deeper into the labyrinthine tombs beneath the church of blasphemy.

By Urdur’s torchlight, they cautiously creep through the silent crypt maze, treading upon the tombstones of the dead.

Image

Four times, they must turn back from shadow-filled dead ends.

Image

Finally, they discover what might be a way out of the twisting, brick warren.

A doorway opens into a jagged, rocky tunnel that slopes down into absolute darkness (22).

But from that yawning, black maw emanates a terrible stench.

A chill crawls upon their flesh as Grothnak and Telkis recognize the unmistakable scent of the abominable serpent men that were encountered beneath the abandoned Foaming Mug Inn. The two warriors cannot help but remember with dread their heinous inhuman visages:

Grothnak nods grimly. He fights back mounting dread, filling its space in his mind with resolve. "Behind me," he tells Telkis and Urdur. "We fought these things before. They bleed. We can kill them. Steel your minds!"

He steps forward into the darkness as quietly as he can.

Last time we encountered those things, did we get a chance to tell whether we can see them with infravision?

Urdur decides not to ask about the "things" that bleed. He'll find out soon enough. He takes his place in the middle, hoping he can make himself useful if a fight breaks out.
How do we know you're not a donkey-brained man?

Mourned by crypt angels, the fearless heroes descend the slope from the tomb maze into the stony channel under the ground.

They resolutely follow the subterranean shaft, wary of the reptilian abhorrences that can seemingly cloud the minds of men to become unseen. The air grows colder and a foot of freezing water lies across the lowest regions of the dank underworld cavity.

[Please see PMs I have sent you, before you post]

The heroes slosh through the icy standing water, eventually emerging onto drier ground beyond. The two gnomes believe the grade ascends. In time, they finally emerge from the secret tunnel into an empty field hundreds of feet north of the Temple of Merikka. Urdur quickly extinguishes his torch.

The hole is covered by a dead tree stump they push out of the way. Lantern lights buzz with activity around the temple. Remembering their rendezvous point, the brave trio quietly make their way west to the windmill, having somehow escaped the temple of atrocities alive.

Our tale of terror continues in: Chapter 11: The Village of the Bodysnatchers.
