Ingrid Esthof, cleric

Ingrid gets her gear as well. She kisses the medallion before replacing the silver chain around her neck.

"Let's move," she says to Vodarte and follows after the Mouser. On the top of the ladder, she readies her weapon, just in case, and heads over to the stables. Climbing to the roof doesn't seem like a good idea in such a torrential rain (not everybody has such agility and reflexes as the Mouser!), but if the stables have a loft, it certainly is a good place to hide. On the other hand, they need to be able to leave the premises quickly, if their companions return.

Before entering the stables, Ingrid pulls the Mouser to the halt and whispers: "If there are grooms or servants inside, there is a chance that they are oblivious to what's happening in the inn. We should not confront them straight away. Let's just say we are looking for shelter against the rain. Of course, we'll be on our guard and will not let them leave either."

Inside the stables, she checks the number of horses and looks for her own as well.
Forgot to cast Bless on Hoom... :( it should've taken another round to do so, though. Can't waste time now.

Hoom Feethos:

Hoom is astonished by the piles of bodies in front of Telkis, which is almost as tall as the gnome warrior.

"Telkis, sorry for my delay but I do come with good news."

He thrusts his sword forward at (17).

Short Sword (THAC0 20) to hit [1d20+1] = 9+1 = 10 / Damage: S/M [1d6] = 2 - L [1d8] = 4

"I found what we sought and our time here is no longer needed. We can withdraw with honor."

"Tarry no further, Hoom, and draw your weapons. We can not retreat with our allies on the floor!"

He continues to try to subdue the natives. If he can run to chase down Derek, he will do so, though it doesn't seem likely this round.

Die roller is down, I'm getting 0s for my to hit but max damage. Weird! Feel free to roll for me at home Inferno if this is holding things up.

Day Four
Village of Briarsgate
Evening. Wednesday, October 19th, 576 CY
Cold, Thunderstorms

Telkis and Pelias were slowly wearing away at the unrelenting tide of bloodthirsty maniacs inside the Golden Grain Inn when Hoom Fethos joins the fray!

Hoom is astonished by the piles of bodies in front of Telkis, which is almost as tall as the gnome warrior himself. "Telkis, sorry for my delay but I do come with good news," he says, thrusting his shortsword at a crazed townsman (17) and failing to pierce his leather armor. "I found what we sought and our time here is no longer needed. We can withdraw with honor."

Telkis says, "HOOM! There you are! It seems... you were right. ... 'huff puff'... I owe you an apology, sir! ... I doubted your word... Oof!" as he misses a ferocious female bar patron (01) with Cranach due to the insidious poison still racing through his system.

Pelais cries, "Tarry no further, Hoom, and draw your weapons. We can not retreat with our allies on the floor!" as he attacks a wounded, armored villager (19) and beats him senseless.

The berserk hellions continue their orgy of destruction. But for all their fevered intensity, none can land a damaging blow! The rail-thin muleskinner (14) retrieves his dropped, bloody cudgel, and the malicious third-generation corn farmer (13) races around the bar and tries to brain Pelias with a club and misses, shattering the long mirror behind the bar. SKRASH!

Telkis slams his morningstar into the muleskinner (14), shattering teeth, bone and consciousness.

Pelais slashes at the friendly, murderous traveling merchant seething atop the bar (07) and misses him. 'Trapped' by the very bar that protects his life, the young paladin can't pursue Derek Desleigh, yet.

One dangerous harridan (01) ruminates hard over Hoom's words and finally shouts, "'Ere now! This one 'found what they sought'!"
The other rampaging villagers harken to her chilling, hatefilled words.

Actions? ...For two rounds this time please. Thanks.

DM Notes:
Map:
    • Each square is 5 feet.
The bracket shapes in the walls are chimneys.
Red markers are unconscious or dead.
Sharing a 5' square with someone while fighting (even if they are unconscious) gives a penalty of -1 to hit.
The Kitchen (room 2) only shows what can be seen from Telkis’ POV.

Ingrid and Vodarte, drugged and groggy, have -4 to hit, reaction and initiative.
Mouser and Telkis have -2 to hit, reaction and initiative.
The party has within it people who attack twice, so no Initiative roll is needed. Party goes first and last.

1 and 14 Attack Telkis: [1d20] = 13, [1d20] = 15 Both miss.
17 Attacks Hoom: [1d20] = 13 Misses.
7, 13 Attack Pelais: [1d20] = 14, [1d20] = 2 Both miss.

Meanwhile, the captives of the Golden Grain Inn (6) escape their iron cages. Ingrid, Mouser and Vodarte quickly, quietly climb the ladder up through the ceiling trapdoor, out of the dungeon and into a dark bedroom with papers scattered on the floor before a desk. It's night now, and the adventurers don't know the hour. The cacophony of chaos is louder here and they see a woolen rug had been pulled back to access the trapdoor. Vodarte the Ranger is still dazed, silent and queasy from the poison.

Carrying their belongings, the escaped prisoners open the window and crawl through it out into the torrential downpour of a howling lightning storm. Then, they run for their lives. They don't get ten feet before they are soaked to the skin. Splashing through the mud behind the inn, illuminated and exposed by lightning flashes in the sky, they race through the night and its roaring deluge, past an outhouse and into the Inn's Stable (unmarked building north of 6*).

Image Image

KRAKOOM!

Within the stable, Ingrid and Mouser see their horses, dry and safe. There are two other horses and no people here under the stable's rafters.

Do you put on your armor before attempting to climb up into the rafters?
      • Hurriedly donning armor, to the extent of just being able to walk in it without it falling off, takes 10 rounds (minutes) minus the AC of the armor. So splinted mail takes 6 rounds. Studded leather armor takes 3.
Then it takes another identical length of time to properly secure the armor if you wish to fight in it.
So splint takes a minimum of 12 minutes in total to properly don. Studded leather armor takes 6.
Actions? ...For two rounds/minutes this time please. Thanks.

Pelias has many questions for Hoom but is in too much pain and too preoccupied to ask them now. He continues to try to bludgeon the aggressors. He will tend to Bo and Grothnak if they fall before the end of the second round.

Attack with long sword (THAC0 19) [1d20] = 19, damage [1d8] = 6

Attack with long sword (THAC0 19) [1d20] = 18, damage [1d8] = 5

Ingrid Esthof, cleric

Ingrid stashes her armor on her horse (the sack she uses for travels is hopefully somewhere around). There is no time to properly done it, so she would have to rely on her agility, shield, and Trithereon's blessings. She checks if the escape route is unobstructed, in case they have to leave the place quickly.

She looks around - are there any other places to hide?

Day Four
Village of Briarsgate
Evening. Wednesday, October 19th, 576 CY
Cold, Thunderstorms

Image

Within the Golden Grain Inn, among the clawing, screaming, raging villagers, one dangerous old harridan (01) shouts, "'Ere now! This one 'found what they sought'!"

Image

The other rampaging townsfolk harken to her chilling, hatefilled words.

Hoom Feethos says to the remaining foes, "That's right! We found what we were looking for. Your plans are in ruins. Your master is dead. Lay down your arms or lie down on the pile," as he runs his shortsword through a leather breastplate and deep into a maniac's chest (17), adding to Telkis' wall of pain!

"Master?" shrieks the bloodthirsty harpy (01) with hateful derision. Like every villager in this inn, she seemingly has no fear of death. "You lot've no earthly idea what you've gotten yourselves into! But you soon will, my dearies, you soon will!"" she cackles with malicious glee. "...When you become one of us!"

Telkis bares his brass fangs as Cranach hammers the old crone (01) like a runaway bull! She slams into the inn floor, silent and unmoving.

Pelias strikes down the murderous traveling merchant (07) with a fell handed blow that knocks him from atop the bar, crashing down through two bar stools into unconsciousness.

The two remaining patrons, fearless and ferocious, do not relent. Their vicious blows deflect off the armor of Telkis and Pelias.

Telkis regards his final foe, the villager with the vein-riddled nose who had helped bring down Grothnak (04) and finishes him with a thunderous blow of his morningstar.

The last man standing, the third generation corn farmer (13) who, before this season had no history of violence in his life, lets loose a bloodcurdling scream and lunges at Pelias like a feral animal! The paladin bludgeons him out of the air, sending him through shelves of glasses behind the bar and into oblivion. KRASH!!

The battle was ended. After nearly ten minutes of life-and-death warfare and the deafening discord of that wild mayhem, the abrupt silence was overpowering, softened only by the continued deluge outside these walls. Two dozen bodies lay broken, beaten and bloody across the common room of the Golden Grain Inn, including among them Long Bo the druid and Grothnak the warrior.

KRAKA-BOOM!

Meanwhile, the escaped prisoners of the dungeon beneath the Golden Grain Inn (6) take shelter from the thunderstorm in the stable behind the inn.

As the queasy, dazed Vodarte tries to catch his breath, Grey Mouser begins to don his armor. Ingrid stashes her armor on her horse. She confirms an unobstructed path from the stable, but between the downpour, the mist, the darkness, and the unfamiliar terrain, the horses would not be able to move much faster than a walk. The priestess scans the dim stable for hiding places and sees the shadows of the rafters, a dark mass of hay bales, and six unlit horse stalls of which two are empty.

Then Ingrid and Mouser turn and see Elden Vodarte laying on the ground in the darkness. His possessions are on the earthen stable floor beside him, and he isn't moving.

Telkis Brassfang, Gnome Warrior

Telkis gazes around stupified for a split second at the carnage, then springs into action. "Quick! Quick now. We've got to get moving," says Telkis. "That foul, eye-patched fellow got out the door a few minutes ago, we must be gone before he returns with fresh villager fodder. I'd die of fatigue if I but saw another one of 'em... Hoom, you and I on Bo, Pelias, can you manage Grothnak on your own? I espied a door out the kitchen. Let's get them out of here and regroup." He heaves up on Long Bo's shoulders. "Oof!... Did you see any sign of the others, Hoom, as you came in the back way?"

Hoom Feethos:

"No Telkis, I saw no one else. The other should be waiting for us in the stables. They are uninjured other than Mouser. But there sluggish movements suggests some injury or intoxication." Hoom says as he climbs over the human wall dragging his short sword over the men to wipe away their fluids before placing it back in it's scabbard. He then proceeds with Telkis to Long Bo. Upon reaching the druid he first reaches down and retrieves the man's weapon, his spear. Loosely placing it between Long Bo's belt and body. He then reaches down again taking Long Bo's arm and placing over his shoulder, assisting Telkis in dragging the unconscious man to the kitchens and then to the stables to their waiting allies.

Pelias takes a few moments to catch his breath. "Hoom, did you not find the others? And if you did, why did they not come to our aid?"

He looks over the fallen townsfolk. "I fear they will simply attack us again once they arise. What to do with them? A first step is disarming them." He will urge the others to quickly grab wood-based weapons and throw them in the fire. Any others he will try to break and if this isn't possible, take as many as possible with him.

"Let us take one or two for interrogation. We must determine how they came to this mental state."

Finally, he steps over Bo with a look of regret on his face, and lays his hands upon Grothnak. "Heironeus, grant me the power to heal our warrior friend!" he calls.

Day Four
Village of Briarsgate
Evening. Wednesday, October 19th, 576 CY
Cold, Thunderstorms

Image

The two dozen maniacal hellions of the Golden Grain Inn (6) were subdued at last. In a surreal tableau, their bloody, broken remains lay scattered across the wooden floor of the silent, cozy common room.

Hoom and Telkis quickly lift the enormous, unconscious Long Bo and drag the druid into the messy kitchen, past an open door to the basement, out the back door, into the torrential downpour, through mud, rain, mist and lightning, past an outhouse and toward the Inn's Stables (the large unmarked building north of 6).

Pelias collects wooden bludgeons from lifeless hands and feeds them to the fire. His questions unanswered, he next ponders taking hostages from this place. Then he lays his life-giving hands upon the fallen form of mighty Grothnak. "Heironeus, grant me the power to heal our warrior friend!" he calls. At the holy touch of the young paladin from the slums of Hookhill, Grothnak awakens, badly bruised and beaten.

The two grievously wounded warriors are alone in the quiet inn, surrounded by the bodies of villagers, beneath the swirling storm.

Hiding in the dark stable, Ingrid and Mouser turn and see Elden Vodarte laying on the ground in the darkness. His possessions are on the earthen stable floor beside him, and he isn't moving.

"Elden!" Ingrid suppresses a scream and runs to her trusty companion. She kneels down and examines him, praying for the best.

The Mouser had gotten his armor affixed to the point that he could walk in it, and was about to join Ingrid at Vodarte's side when he suddenly sees shapes emerging from the rain and the mist, heading directly for the stable. Reminded of the misty shapes of the Dim Forest, the little thief readies Cats Claw, Scalpel and his nerve. But he soon recognizes a gnome's shape among the forms, and Bo's spear.

Soaking wet, Hoom and Telkis enter the unlit stable, dragging the unconscious Long Bo. They discern Vodarte laying on the ground in the darkness. Ingrid frantically checks the ranger's pulse and his breathing, and finds no sign of life.

Telkis Brassfang, Gnome Warrior

"We've got one down... 'hoof!'... oh, dear, I see you do as well. Was it the poison? I nearly succumbed to it myself..." Telkis says upon entering the stables. He trails off when he realizes instinctively that Elden is not merely unconscious. He lays down the lumbering Druid and approaches the body. "Was he wounded? Is there blood?" He scans Elden, then turns him to examine his back, checking for wounds. He looks to Ingrid. "What can we do?... Can you help him with your healing magic?"
