I agree, but I would have reversed those two clauses. :)

Mentally, Osric does the best job of cleaning it all up with cool technical precision.
But emotionally, nothing beats 1e for warmth, nostalgia, and art that triggers smile-inducing memories.

OSRIC does a really good job for the most part, but there are some places where the author decided that AD&D 1e was dumb and changed the rules to what he liked better (e.g., the cost of rations in OSRIC is outrageous). So even though OSRIC is much better organized, if I ever run a game using it I'm going to need a list of "house rules" to revert some of those changes back to the AD&D 1e original rules.

You're right.
I'm hard pressed to think of a system that doesn't need some house rules to improve it.

That said, I forget who said this about editors: Of all the urges of man: sex, greed, war; none are greater than the urge to fuck with other people's writing.

Oh, man. That's so true.

I wish I'd had that quote in my Law Review editor days. I'd have made it part of my e-mail signature. :D

I wonder who said that. It sounds a little like Twain.

Yes, this is definitely something we should do!

Chronology: seven to five years ago he could have met the whole trio (that's when Ingrid joined)
(Khorst died five years ago. Ingrid left the monastery about one-and-a-half/two years ago)

Khorst's death, I think, was never "publicized". But monster hunters have their grapevine and rumors.

Hi everyone,
Character sheets are coming along nicely! Thanks.

I'm going to be travelling for work from Monday morning til Thursday night, and will be unable to post frequently if at all.
Maybe we can use that time to wrap up everyone's character sheets. If all sheets are done by Thursday, I can start the game Friday. :)

Finished character checklist:
  • -Background info filled in.
-Description and/or a picture of your hero.
    -Inventory locked down.
-Encumbrance, including weapons and armor, tallied up and recorded on the sheet.
-Move rate, adjusted for strength and encumbrance (as per pp. 101-102 in PHB), recorded on the sheet.
-THAC0's recorded on the sheet for each of your weapons
-Race and class abilities, if any, recorded under "Notes" section
Also, please familiarize yourselves with the newly updated 'house rules' thread, and 'game locations' thread.

Thanks everyone.

Best,
Inferno

Thanks, everyone.

We're almost ready!

Grognardsw: Please make a final choice on a magic item.

Mr. Kent: Great character image! Please fill out the remaining fields of your sheet. :)
I’d also encourage you to buy the best armor you can afford!

Ogre Mage: Your AC should read like this: 6/8/7. From behind, Bo has no shield nor dex adjustment. Thanks.

Everyone except Fulci: Please take a minute to flesh out your magic item. Like magic itself in this world, they are rare and special. Name them, describe them, write up their legendary history, etc.

I'll start the game once this is all complete. Hopefully, tonight or tomorrow morning! :)

Thanks,

Hi,
Here are slightly updated Character Creation guidelines for new characters:

Game System: AD&D 1e by the book, except where noted below.

Tone: Lovecraftian, Fantasy Horror

Stats: Choose from one of the following arrays, and assign as you like. No modifications except for racial. Fyi, each array has an average of 12.5.
  • A) 18, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
    B) 17, 15, 13, 12, 9, 9
    C) 16, 14, 13, 13, 10, 9
    D) 15, 15, 15, 11, 10, 9
Both Int and Cha must be at least an 8.

Race and Class: Any from 1e PHB except assassins. No Unearthed Arcana.

Starting experience points: 4,002 xp

Hit points: Maximum for first level. You’ll roll the rest on the US dice roller. Re-roll 1s.

Alignment: No evil or chaotic neutral characters.

Starting GP, as per the players handbook, x2 due to your xp.

Spell casters: Starting spells in your spellbook are rolled for, as per PHB.

Starting magic items: One +2 weapon or its equivalent. (800xp worth of magic items)

Unseen Servant dice roller will be used to track all rolls. Campaign code is 329.

The world is a horror fantasy version of Greyhawk.

Fyi, Among the recently murdered PCs were a fighter and a paladin. The party sorely needs combatants.

Thanks!

I had a bit of down time this morning and worked on my PC a bit. I haven't played an elf in a long time so I'm leaning that way. Using the "16, 14, 13, 13, 10, 9" stat line I came up with:

STR 16
INT 10
WIS 9
DEX 14-> 15
CON 13-> 12
CHR 13

Seems like he'd be capable of getting separated from the group and surviving...

Here's a question from someone that hasn't played 1e in... about 3 decades. How do proficiencies work? This is a level 3 fighter, so he'd have 5 proficiencies total. I seem to recall the ability to double up on proficiencies. Or is that specialties?

Hi Rusty,
There are no skill proficiencies or weapon specializations in AD&D 1e.
We aren't using Unearthed Arcana. :)

C) 16, 14, 13, 13, 10, 9
D) 15, 15, 15, 11, 10, 9

Both Int and Cha must be at least an 8.

Race and Class: Any from 1e PHB except assassins.

Starting experience points: to follow.

Hit points: Maximum for first level. You’ll roll the rest on the US dice roller. Re-roll 1s.

Alignment: No evil or chaotic neutral characters.

Starting GP: as per the players handbook, x2 due to your level.

The world: a dark reimagining of Greyhawk.

Magic-Users and Illusionists: It's a low magic world. Sorcery is unwholesome. I'll provide the available spell list, and starting spells in your spellbook will be rolled for, as per the PHB.

Starting magic items: to follow. Will be modest.

Unseen Servant dice roller will be used to track all rolls. Campaign code is 329.

I've got his basics down. Got to figure what my initial expenditure is for equipment and calculate encumbrance, then XP and HP. And he'll be square. Hopefully by sometime tomorrow.
