What the Hell happened with V?

#1 Post by Rhourk »

The humming in their mind's grew louder. It became a scream, irritation turned to pain. Zildjin felt a warm flow of blood from his ear and nose. The two beasts that pulled themselves from the pit seemed unaffected, if they were not the very source of the effect. They lumbered forward flailing about with huge, grotesque appendages. They were composed entirely of brain matter. Crazy Wolf hacked again and again. Massive fonts of grey and red gore splashed across the floor. V dodged around the second beast, narrowly avoiding an attack. Static filled the air as the first beast convulsed and sent forth a blast of pure psychic power. Those closest to the beast recoiled in pain. Now blood flowed from Crazy Wolf's ears as well.

The first beast went down in a heap of disintegrating flesh beneath a renewed surge of fury from the party. They squared off against the second. Then...silence. The psychic droning stopped. They staggered, so great was their relief. The remaing beast turned to the pit and then stepped back.

Rising from the pit, where he had entered unseen, came V. He simply floated from the floor below, suspended in mid-air. In his hands he clutched a red crystal. He raised it above his cloaked head, as a priest would present a sacrifice to the heavens. He howled in pain (the first sound you ever heard him utter) as the crystal morphed in his hands. Razor sharp red shards stabbed into his hands and the crystal changed and flowed like molten metal, with a life of its' own. His flesh ripped as it drove through the nerves in his arms and into his spine. He seemed to spasm for a moment, the wounds caused in his arms already healing as the crystal fused with his spine, straightening his for and ending the spasm. A great glossy fan of red sprang from his neck, ripping away his cloak and mask. It formed a huge collar, red, spiked and higher than his head, coming halfway around his face, where his long black tentacles licked at the air.

"Thank you, warm blooded fools. The Collective is now mine. The power of a million million minds at my disposal. With this the Devourer himself will now before me. You should rejoice, for your actions will ring through eternity and to the next"

He moved with blinding speed to the door. The party attempts to follow but cannot keep up. They burst from the dead Titans mouth in the early evening air outside. V could have gone any direction. Galius launches his dragon into the air. He easily spot V in the distance, standing patiently.

The dragon dives suddenly, just avoiding a pair of bizarre metal chariots, screeching through the air. Nothing pulls the chariots, but they leave a trail of fire behind them. They dive toward V, slowing as they go. Each is manned by two Mindflayers.

A jet of fire explodes from a hill across the ravine, streaking through the air. One of the chariots is instantly engulfed in a huge blast. Both occupants are instantly incinerated. The second chariot dips low, scooping V off the ground and with a deafening roar, speeds away into the night.

OOC: you looked at the hill where the fire came from and found nothing.

Is it clear what the party knows, or thinks they know, about who Vis was from the beginning?

At this point, the consensus is that he was an evil Mindflayer with psychic abilities far beyond you ability to combat. He controlled or conditioned your minds to accept him and not to ask questions from the start. The crystal, I believe he referred to it as "The Collective" was probably his goal the entire time. He quickly abandoned his disguise when he acquired it. Now you are left wondering, how much of what you thought was real over the last few months was actually real and how much did you see based on his psionic suggestions, or was he ever that powerful? Did he get what he was after, or did he leave because the rising power levels of the group would have lead to his eventual detection. Will you ever see him again? Oh, I think you will.

Putting this here for reference next time we're able to rest/identify/etc
Found within the Temple of Time
  • 5 noteworthy gems worth roughly 10,000 gp
  • Amulet with large golden setting containing an orange gem
  • The "finest scimitar ever seen"
  • Chest containing an iron sphere, comprised of an interlocking band mechanism.
Totally should have asked if there was any sort of 'key hold' that the scimitar fit into!
