Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"Watrius, all of you," calls Nadix. "I don't know what this evil goddess has told you, that you would accept the torture and murder of your own kin, but she is lying to you, as all devils lie.

"Will you now stand by while she kills Hemda? Your own daughter?! Your entire village?! Where does it end? It is not too late to stop this demon and undo the damage your mistakes have wrought!"

While speaking, the Edosian's front two arms are gesturing for dramatic effect as his third arm slowly reaches behind him, readying his phaser. If Nadix can get a clear shot at Ursula, he will take it.

Tensions run hot at the landing site as pirates, natives, gods and officers of the Federation come to a momentous showdown.

Nadix and Ryerson plead with Watrius, imploring him to see sense. As he waxes eloquent, Nadix takes the opportunity to slip his third hand behind him and ready his phase unnoticed by the rest.

Watrius only half-listens, lost in his own thoughts. He is a man visibly torn between two equally frightening ideals. Looking to his own men and seeing them troubled as well, he closes his mind and snaps back at Nadix angrily. "Quiet, devil thrall! You mock your divine masters by speaking in their presence! We shall not lap up the poisonous honey that coats your insidious words!"

The pirate Ursula Norton continues her calm threats, and when Watrius asks why she does not simply punish them all and force Byros to hand over the Rod, she smirks patronizingly. "I may have earlier, Watrius, but now I require more. Byros has been a nuisance. All of these scoundrels have. Don't worry, you will see him beg for his life, but first he must made to obey." She smiles a most disturbingly warm smile at Byros. "I want him to obey." She emphasizes the point by placing her disruptor at Hemda's neck, causing both Byros and Watrius to cry out in despair. "Take me instead!" wails Watrius; "I surrender, I am not afraid!" cries the fiery Byros.

Nadix continues to scan the proceedings, waiting to take a preemptive shot at Ursula without putting Hemda in danger, but frustratingly the opportunity never comes. Ursula carefully keeps the girl pressed against her as a shield.

Byros gives the crew of the Janus one long, guilty look of defeat, then begins to walk over to his captors with head bowed in shame. Watrius wipes tears from his eyes and thanks him and Yormahan for her mercy, while Hemda struggles and defiantly orders Byros not to give in. Ursula appears to be enjoying herself, and flashes her victorious smile at the Federation officers. "You may return to your ship. I am feeling gracious today."

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

Nadix's third finger on his third hand secretly sets his phaser to heavy stun as he says coldly, "You've won, Ursula. Let the girl go. Or does 'the mighty goddess' aim to rule a planet while cowering behind a child?"

Ursula smirks and shrugs off Nadix's insult. "The ways of the gods are mysterious, 'devil thrall', you should know that. Now, I suggest you depart before I change my mind."

Nadix thumbs his phaser settings as the face-off comes to its end. Byros, head hung in defeat, walks the rest of the way to Ursula, unable to look his love Hemda in the eye. As they exchange the Rod the girl struggles against her captor, kicking and wrestling fiercely.

There is a brief struggle between the three of them, as Byros attempts to free Hemda from the pirate's clutches. Ursula brings up the Rod and strikes Byros across the head, sending him to the floor unconscious—but in doing so, she is left momentarily unguarded! Nadix whips his phaser forward and fires, sending its stunning beam right into her chest! The energy field generated by her life support belt crackles and disintegrates, and the beam knocks her to the ground, dropping the Rod of Life in the process. Ursula, dazed but still able to act, scrambles to pick it up.

"Kill them!" she screams, her voice suddenly enraged and shrill like a banshee!

"Kill them!" replies the shifty village priest. From beneath their clothes he and his six warriors brandish disruptor pistols! Watrius cowers over to Hemda, grabbing her in his arms.

Actions?

Rolls:
Ursula 'reaction' save: [2d6] = 7 — she is not goaded

Nadix LK 9 save (can he get a shot?): [3d6] = 9 — yes!
At DX 16, a close range shot with zero modifier is an automatic hit! (needs 1-6 on a D6).
Stun damage [3d6] = 10
…vs. Ursula's defending roll: [1d6] = 2 = 8 damage total
…Ursula's personal life support belt absorbs 5 points, and is depleted = 3 damage gets through
…3 stun damage isn't enough to knock her out (50% CON), so it just does 1/2 damage instead = 2 damage

Watrius 'reaction' save: [4d6] = 20 — he cowers

Ursula's native henchmen 'reaction' save: [3d6] = 13 — they attack

Ursula's DX save to avoid dropping the Rod: [3d6] = 13 — fail

The skirmish erupts! The officers of the Federation stand their ground and concentrate their firepower on Ursula, quickly overpowering her with stun beams before she can escape into the jungle with the Rod of Life. The pirate slumps to the ground, clutching her prize greedily.

The Coxan agitators who had followed Byros issue a bloodcurdling war cry and charge toward their own kindred with spears raised—some even throwing their spears as they charge. One of Ursula's warriors breaks and flees into the jungle, but the others clumsily open fire into with their disruptors. One of the beams passes through the charging Coxans and blasts Ensign Patel square in the chest, throwing him to the ground, stripped of all consciousness from the intense pain! Two more disruptor beams find another ensign and Nadix, tearing through the shielding of their life belts and burning grazing wounds into their sides.

As one of the agitators rushes ahead of the rest, he is blasted by a disruptor at deadly close range. His body phases out of existence with a horrendous, agonized scream!

Image

The village priest sees his goddess stunned on the ground, and watches another one of his warriors fall to a stun beam. His morale breaks and he turns to abandon his flock, but before he can take more than a step into the jungle Chief Engineer Gareb fires a tiny burst from his plasma pistol at him. and ball of death sends the priest flying several meters into the trunk of a nearby tree, where he crumples to the ground unconscious.

Coxan agitators #1, 2 & 4 are still alive and fighting.
Ursula's lackeys #2, 4, 5 & 6 are still fighting, while #3 is running away.
Ursula and lackey #1 are stunned.
Watrius and Hemda are cowering.
Ensign Patel, Byros, and the Priest are unconscious.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

Despite the urgent need to recover the Rod of Life, Nadix sees the defense of the landing party as the greater need. He fires upon a Coxan under Ursula's spell before more harm can befall Federation personnel.

Initiative: [1d6+4] = 5+4 = 9, Phaser to hit: [1d6-4] = 6-4 = 2

Then he shouts: "Your false goddess and priest are undone, exposed as the frauds that they are! For whom do you fight now?!
"Surrender! We wish you no harm!"

Dr. Ryerson hoists up Mr. Patel under the arms, dragging him behind an engine nacelle of the Minerva shuttle. Once there he begins to rifle through his pack of futuristic medicines to revive the young crewman, hot fire from energy weapons crackling and zapping through the air around them! Patel's eyes flutter open, unsure of how he got there.
(+2 CT, no longer unconscious)

Nadix quickly shifts position and trains his weapon onto one of Ursula's brainwashed Coxan warriors, sending a cold stun beam into the native's chest and knocking him unconscious. With his paradoxically calm, alien voice, the Edosian shouts at the remaining Coxans to stand down.

Seeing their number falling around the prone body of their cruel goddess, to whom they have devoted so much, the fanatical Coxan warriors begin to falter. The three who remain standing turn and flee into the jungle, casting back looks of panic and hatred at the party.

The rebels shout out a terrible war cry and begin to chase their village brothers into the jungle, their blood running hot from the kinstrife that has ripped their village apart.

Watrius and Hemda, sensing the passing of imminent danger, raise their heads and look about the clearing, shock and relief battling for dominance in their minds.

(Ursula and two of her lackeys are unconscious by phaser stuns. Byros and Ursula's priest have been knocked unconcious.)

Actions?

Rolls:
The Coxans have no hope of being able to act before Nadix's extremely high initiative roll.

Nadix hits!
Phaser 2 stun: [3d6] = 13 - [1d6] = 1
12 Stun Damage gets through, easily greater than half the target's current CT and therefore causing a KO.

Coxan url=http://www.unseenservant.com/default.as ... 28&macid=0]Reaction roll: [3d6] = 13[/url] (vs. Nadix's 9, +2 for incapacitated leader, +2 for taking casualties)
The Coxan scabs cease fighting to review the situation.

Group Morale check: [3d6] = 13 (need 12 or less)
The Coxan scabs break and retreat into the jungle.

Morale check to chase (14 or less) [3d6] = 11
The Coxan agitators pursue the fleeing loyalist warriors to settle their kinstrife.

Ryerson heals Patel:
Ryerson MN+skill (11): [3d6] = 8, Medical pack: +[1d4] = 2 to CT
Effects are instantaneous, healed for 2 CT.

Then, to Hemda and Watrius: “We will bring this false goddess to justice, among our own kind. The Rod of Life must return to your village. "I think I'm alright, Doctor. Thanks a heap," says Mr. Patel, touching his bruised forehead gingerly. He wobbles to his feet and finds his balance again.

Hemda looks wonderingly at the strange, six-limbed Nadix, for the first time experiencing that wonderfully "human" sentiment of communal understanding and wellbeing that is universal to all species across the galaxy. "Qualities of… a leader?" she asks, looking toward her father.

"Of course, my dear," the aged Watrius replies, his tone now softened with shame. "Perhaps it is time that I retire from public life. I am too old and set in my ways, and they have led us to destruction. Our people will need to be healed with younger, more vibrant wisdom than I can provide." Now reconnected as father and child, Hemda and Watrius move to Byros and begin to revive him.

The ensigns silently set themselves to task, retrieving disruptor pistols from the fallen and detaining the unconscious Ursula. "She's still unconscious, sir," says one. "What should we do with her?"

Here's the list of the wounded:
  1. Byros, the young iconoclastic upstart (wounded, but conscious)
  2. Ursula's village priest (knocked unconscious by a wound)
  3. Ursula (stunned)
  4. two of Ursula's Coxan warriors (stunned)
The red-shirted ensigns bind the pirate Ursula Norton. Her eyes flutter gently, but it is clear she has not yet regained consciousness. Confiscating her depleted life support field belt, two disruptor pistols and a battered Romulan communicator, they hand over the items to Nadix and Ryerson.

Byros now comes to, blood trickling from his temple. There is a brief show of affection between himself and Hemda, but her father Watrius manages to hold his tongue this time. "Yormahan—or, Ursula, as you call her…—she has whipped half the village into a frenzy, under the influence of the village priest, Falfrax," they explain, pointing to the unconscious ceremonial priest slumped against a nearby tree. "We should return there and calm everyone before more blood is spilled."

The Federation officers quickly question them about each of the pirates: the scientist Dr Leigh Moore, held aboard the Janus; her partner Dr James Silliphant, the pirate Norman Meston, and Romulan Centurion Carlax, all escaped aboard the pirate ship or eliminated; Captain Lawrence Caddigan, killed here on the planet, and his unhinged crewman Stirling Komack, lost in the savanna during the strange bear attack; and now Ursula Norton, second in command, just captured.

All are accounted for, except one: the lone Romulan who has overseen the whole operation—the one who has been mentioned in the pirates' logs and interrogations only cryptically, as "The Commander." It appears that none of the Coxans are aware of this being's shadowy existence.
