Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

His tricorder ineffectual against the personal cloaking device of the escaped Romulan, the serene Edosian grasps his palm phaser and silently enters the bay to cautiously search it and the shuttlecraft.

Phasers set on stun, Ensigns Gilbert and Sullivan move ahead toward the shuttle craft. Gilbert swings right, Sullivan left, then together to the door. On the way Gilbert looks through the front window to inside. If no one is seen, they move to the door. One man on each side, Sullivan hits the door open button then jumps low with phaser pointed inside.

USS Janus, shuttle bay

Nadix searches the room and finds no trace of the Romulan.

Gilbert and Sullivan divide and encircle. They see no movement within the shuttle, and moving to the doorway, open it and prepare to fire. They find the shuttle empty.

Dr. Ryerson hears a noise to his left. At the end of the corridor he sees the Romulan skulking down an access ladder onto their deck. He pauses to laboriously study the sign printed on the wall:

LOWER WARP NACELLE ACCESS
DECK 2
LEADING TO SHUTTLE BAY

The Romulan does not yet seem to have noticed Ryerson.

Dr. Ryerson:

"Carlax! Stop! Ensign!" say Dr. Ryerson with his arm out stretched pointing at the Romulan. "You're surrounded. There is no escape. Give up peacefully."

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

At the physician's words, the orange, three-armed alien calmly aims his palm phaser at the escaped Romulan.

"Your ship is gone, Centrurian Carlax. The shuttlecraft has been disabled. I'm afraid there is no escape."

If he doesn't surrender immediately, Nadix will regretfully attempt to stun him. Should this unfortunate circumstance occur, and Carlax is wearing the Slaver artifact belt, then Nadix will fire his phaser at a higher intensity level, as before, in an attempt to penetrate the Romulan's personal shields.

USS Janus, shuttle bay corridor
Stardate 2271.3.23: 0235h

Dr. Ryerson shouts. "Carlax! Stop! Ensign! You're surrounded. There is no escape. Give up peacefully." Carlax spins around, his face stretched in a maddened grimace. The others come rushing out into the access corridor. Nadix calmly levels his phaser at the Romulan, ordering him to stand down. "The shuttlecraft has been disabled. I'm afraid there is no escape."

Carlax wavers at the emergency access ladder for a moment. His eyebrows quiver as his acute mind calculates the totality of his defeat. The smallest hints of emotion, sorrow and shame, seem to pass across his eyes before being squelched by the warrior's pride that envelops his very being.

"You have miscalculated, conflating my capture with my defeat. Escape may be futile, and it is obvious that I will soon die—but I will have the victory!"

The Romulan grits his teeth, brandishing a stolen phaser. Just as he presses the firing mechanism, Nadix fires a searing shot into his chest. The force of it knocks the Romulan back into the wall and onto the floor; his arm snaps up in shock and his phaser beam pierces a hole into some nearby paneling. His personal force field flickers around him, but holds.

The Romulan stumbles to his feet, hate in his eyes. Or rather—perhaps not hate, but a cold, calculating need to conquer, to prove, to vanquish or be vanquished, like some twisted shadow of his Vulcan cousins. He raises his phaser and the two trade shots again. His shielding buckles under the onslaught of Nadix's weapon, and a wound burns deep into his shoulder. Even now he clenches his teeth in noble silence, refusing to cry out in defeat, and fires with shaking arm harmlessly into the ground. "You cannot win, even if you kill me! I will have won the day!"

Combat rolls
Carlax's initiative: [1d6] = 1 + 3 = 4
Damage from Nadix's attack: Damage [3d6] = 7 - defense of [1d6] = 1
Carlax's current energy shield protection (10 - 6) = 4
Original damage is at least 1/2 of Carlax's CT score, so he is knocked down

Carlax fires back (needs 5 or less; -3 bonus for DX/skill, +4 penalty for being shot at and being knocked down): [1d6] = 6

Nadix second shot (needs ≤2) [1d6-4] = 1-4 = -3 Damage [3d6] = 13 - defense of [1d6] = 5 = 8
Carlax's current energy shield protection (4 - 8) = 0
Carlax's current hits = 4

Carlax second shot (needs 1 or less) [1d6-3] = 6-3 = 3
Image

Nadix has 3/9 energy in his phaser
All others are at full health and with full phaser energy

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"Then it need not come to that, sir," the Edosian replies impassively. "There is no shame in honorable surrender. Drop your weapon."

If Carlax doesn't drop the phaser, Nadix will have no choice but to fire again. If the Romulan's personal shields remain down, the merciful Edosian will fire on "stun."
