Coxa II: At the Jungle's Edge
Stardate 2271.3.22: 1850h

With Costello being carried by the Captain and Dr. Ryerson, the party continues to keep time in their trek to the looming jungle ahead.

Nadix continues to monitor Stirling's progress as they move: his signature is weak but stable, and continues to move slowly to the southeast. No other life signatures, ursinoid or otherwise, can be detected in pursuit. After a minute of hiking the signal loses much of its accuracy, as Stirling move beyond the tricorder's limited range.

Just as full, cold darkness begins to descend on the plain, the party reaches the jungle's edge. Beyond the first patches of trees and bushes their entire field of vision from north to south is swallowed up in pitch blackness. Finding an entry that looks as familiar as anything can in this light, the group plunges into the shelter of the canopy. The deafening wind almost instantaneously dwindles to a muffled hum high above, and it takes a minute or two for their ears to adjust to the relative silence: slowly the overloaded ringing in their ears gives way to a layered cacophony of wild jungle sounds, all bizarre and alien, but always familiar the galaxy over.

At the edge of Nadix's scanning range, he detects Stirling's life signs still relatively stable, but then they become too difficult to pick out amongst the many other human and Coxan life signs in that direction. The party has made decent time and have not lost any ground to the main body of pursuers, with the exception of the smaller group that was breaking off to the north, whose signatures now appear somewhat stronger on the tricorders.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

The Edosian officer softly, stoically reports his findings to the crew, away from the prying ears of their detainees.

Do we have flashlights among our standard issue Star Fleet gear? Thanks.

Captain Wyse will insist that the group stays together and continues moving on towards the craft.

Use your tricorder to find that shuttle and keep us on the right path Commander Nadix. We need to get to safety as quickly as we can out here.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

"Aye, captain." The Edosian serenely scans in the direction of the shuttlecraft, and will report his findings.
Were this not such a pressing occasion, the three-armed scientist would welcome the opportunity to study the exotic fauna of this alien world.

The Edosian successfully tracks the shuttlecraft's bearings, feeling confident that he can guide the party to their vessel using the tricorder.

As the landing mission was considered non-hostile and minimal-contact, only the standard basics were brought: communicators, tricorders and medical kit, and palm phasers. The usual specialized gear of most types can be retrieved from the shuttle, but in a pinch tricorders can be used to provide minimal light as necessary (up to 10m ahead, but cannot be used as tricorders while doing so) and palm phasers can provide warmth, but no light (in this weather, 1 energy per half hour to keep one person warm).

Collins does his best to stay alert and keep an active lookout on both the prisoners and any signs of native animals or peoples sneaking up on the group, but he is definitely happy to hear that they will soon be back at the shuttle!

If needed, Nadix will intermittently use the tricorder as a lightsource, checking the shuttlecraft's position from time to time as they close in on it.

Coxa II: Jungle
Stardate 2271.3.22: 2300h

The party plods through the darkness of the thick jungle. Nadix illuminates the immediate ground ahead with his tricorder, occasionally halting the march to take a reading on the shuttlecraft, and the rest of the party cautiously stumbles along the potholes and thick ground cover, trying their best to keep a sure footing in the limited light. As the minutes go by Costello regains some of his footing, and is eventually able to walk on his own without slowing everyone down. His hands no free, Dr. Ryerson takes out his tricorder and helps illuminate the path ahead.

For over three long hours they march, frequently stopping to take readings—ahead for the shuttlecraft and behind for the pursuers—and to carefully guide themselves around treacherous puddles of sulphurous ooze. Twice Dale Collins catches a pair of large, hollow eyes peering out at them, but both times when he calls a halt they disappear into the night, accompanied by a strange hoot and chitter.

Not long after they pass the place where they met the Coxans, a large nightbird suddenly swoops low overhead, causing Ensign Abbot, Dr. Ryerson and the prisoner Dr. Leigh Moore to stumble into an ooze puddle in surprise! The flying beast flies off into the night as quickly as it came.
Abbot and Ryerson need to make a saving throw (3D6 vs their Luck + Dex modifier) to avoid having each of their items risk being destroyed. The ooze is otherwise harmless from brief contact.
Finally, their goal is reached: at the head of the party Nadix, Ryerson and Abbot stand at edge of the jungle clearing, the familiar hull of the Minerva sitting peacefully under the starry sky.

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

Once Costello's health is improved, the Edosian officer returns the ensign's phaser. "Thank you, Mr. Costello."

Upon reaching the Minerva, Nadix observes the detainees. Faced now with the stark reality of their detention and subsequent departure from the planet to a Federation starship, Nadix expects them to consider bolting one last time.

If they do not, the Edosian carefully scans the Minerva, and the immediate area, for any unsuspected surprises before approaching the shuttlecraft.

Captain Wyse

Lets get on board the shuttle craft before any more nasties try to kill us! Commander Nadix! Does the craft seem as though it was tampered with? Are there any more surprises waiting for us out here?

After a safe confirmation, the captain will usher the captives inside, giving Dr. Leigh Moore a confident smile as she climbs aboard.

Is everybody safe and accounted for? Are you still seeing signs of our pursuers, commander?

LCDR Dale Collins; Helmsman

Collins sees the shuttlecraft and can't help but break into a grin and go up to is and pat the spacecraft on the side. "Ahhh...it's good to see you again girl"; he says mostly to himself, but loud enough to be over-heard. After an awkward moment where he realizes that the others can hear him; he blushes and says; "Ahh....I'll just climb aboard and make sure everything's still working"; and then proceed to do just that....

Coxa II: Landing Site
Stardate 2271.3.22: 2300h[/b]

Prior, during their march…
Ensign Abbot, Dr. Ryerson and Leigh all splash helplessly in the ooze. As he slips into the muck Ryerson has the presence of mind to toss his tricorder into the bushes, and quickly grabs for the the phaser and communicator attached to the utility belt under his shirt. Abbot, however, desperately tries to wipe the muck from himself and Leigh. "Abbot, you fool! Don't worry about that, get your electronics out of there, quick!" yells Ryerson.

Once back on firm ground, Ryerson retrieves his tricorder and reminds Ensign Abbot that as foul-smelling as the muck might be, it is only harmful to life after prolonged contact; the real danger is in its corrosiveness against conductive metals. He checks his own equipment: everything is operational, just a faint spot of rust burned into the metal plating of his communicator. Ensign Abbot's phaser, however, corrodes into dust as he wipes the slime away. His communicator, though damaged, is still functional. Leigh Moore is quite unhappy to find small portions of her metallic spacesuit tastefully disintegrated. They continue on into the night, the foul burning smell lingering on their clothes.

Back at the landing site…
Nadix eyes their guests carefully, and is convinced their glum willingness to comply, for now at least. He scans the area for life signs and finds the usual background noise of animals prowling about the jungle, as well as a large body of humanoids continuing to approach from behind: the Coxans. With the tricorder's limited range and background noise, it's nearly impossible to get an approximate distance—by that time they'd be within 100m and nearly upon them—but surely they would have gained some ground in the jungle. Any further hesitations could compromise their position.

Helmsman Collins waxes nostalgic over the shuttlecraft, feeling a personal connection to it that few in the crew would understand besides Chief Endilev. He opens the hatch and climbs in to get the shuttle started.

With the coast clear and Collins starting things up, Captain Wyse gives the order to board, and the crew begin to embark. Inside, Collins delicately runs his fingers over the instrumentation to make sure everything is in the right place, and flips the main switches. Nothing happens.

Captain Wyse looks about the shuttles interior impatiently, knowing full well that their pursuers cant be far behind. He tries not to stare at the females exposed skin for too long.

Now would be a good time to get us out of here Mr. Collins.

What seems to be the problem?

Commander Nadix Ar Eth, Science Officer:

Completely oblivious to the human female's newly exposed legs, the Edosian says, "Mister Endilev?" as he scans the shuttlecraft with his tricorder.

"Our Coxan pursuers range is unknown at this time," Nadix reports calmly.

Ensigns Costello and Abbot sit together in the back of the shuttle, quiet and glad to be alive.

"Looks like we'll make it back," whispers Costello.

As the engine fails to start, Abbot answers, "Maybe not."

Collins responds to the Captain with a bit of anxiety in his voice and sweat starting to trickle from his brow; "The controls aren't responding Captain!"

Taking a deep breath to calm down; Dale turns to the Engineering officer and the Science officer and says; "Commander Endilev, Commander Nadix; can either of you determine the problem?"

Endilev throws up his arms and pounds his fists into a nearby panel. "Aghh! What's wrong this time?!" His Andorian temper always gets the better of him when ship's technology under his supervision misbehaves.

He quickly tears open a cabinet and yanks out an engineering diagnostic device. He whirls it over a console or two, utters a dissatisfied grunt and and tries again. "I don't get it, what's wrong with her? I don't need you to tell me that, Dr. Silliphant—of course she's not starting!—I just can't figure out why! Will somebody shut that man up? I'm going to check the engine nacelles."

The Andorian officer tosses a pile of gadgets at Ensign Abbott and barks, "With me." He proceeds immediately to perform scans on the engines, calling back confidently that he can find out what's going on in twelve minutes.

Image

Rolls:
Endilev's diagnostic roll…
MN 9 + tricorder: [3d6-5] = 16-5 = 11 Failure to get immediate results.

He expects results in [2d10] = 12 minutes.
