Ship's Computer

#1 Post by Starbeard »

The ship's computer files are public and can be accessed by anyone, but some will require security clearance to view or alter.

Feel free to contribute any 'fact files' from the adventure, if it helps you keep track of things. I'll be doing the same. All entries will be linked at the top of this post.

Edoans
Star Trek Concordance (1976) wrote: Arex, Lieutenant
The navigator on the Enterprise—a tripedal alien with orange skin, round yellow eyes, a concave-structured head, and a raspy voice. His job is no doubt made easier with three hands to push navigational buttons, but Arex's three arms and legs must have given the Star Fleet quartermaster in charge of uniforms a nasty moment! It may be assumed that Lieutenant Arex comes from a solar system with small or few planets, none of which is as impressive as our solar system's giants, for he cites Saturn, Jupiter, and Neptune to gauge the size of the cosmic cloud; had Arex known larger planets in his own solar system, he would probably have mentioned them instead.

(cf. One of Our Planets Is Missing, TAS s1e3: online video here).

There are times when he retreats to the solitude of his quarters to deliberate...or perhaps to worship the many gods of Edos. One never knows, for Arex never speaks of these moments of isolaton.

Arex’s people are long-lived.

Arex often keeps to himself. However, when the mood is right, he can be persuaded to play a flute-like instrument called a sessica. (It is native to his planet). While the music may be lively or romantic or plaintive, all of it relates to story-songs which tell the history of his race or his family.

Arex’s home planet, Edos, is not a member of the Federation. Rather, it remains in loose alliance with the Federation, coming its agreements for trade, science, and aid in an emergency. Edos lies in the Triangulum constellation, on the rim of the galaxy. It is a jumping-off point for science teams studying the great energy barrier beyond the rim. It is also a peaceful planet which has never been involved in a war. The technology is as advanced as Earth’s; the architectural style of its cities is strictly functional rather than aesthetically pleasing. The society has no class levels. All beings on Edos are equal.

It is highly unusual for there to be more than one child per family. The population must be kept down due to the longer life factor. As a result, all children are precious, and families are close. Ancestral records are kept in great detail, dating back for centuries. Arex’s line can be traced for three thousand years.

Tricorders
There are four types of tricorders available to Star Fleet personnel: engineering, medical, psychoanalysis, and sciences. Each weighs 0.8 units of mass, and has a scanning range of 100 metres maximum (although very detailed scans require close proximity). Their signals generally cannot penetrate force fields, armour, or large quantities of dense material (such as 4 feet of rock), and are typically limited to line of sight only.

Tricorders offer a -5 MN modifier when using them to analyse or comprehend an Unknown (usually a basic MN test).

Aside from their specific functions, all tricorders have the ability to compute, and to record audio or video.

Engineering
Can sense and trace energy sources, fluidic and electronic circuitry, and analyse force fields and radiation sources. Also contains a small repair kit which can be used to repair damage to phasers, communicators and, of course, tricorders.

Medical
Can sense life forms, scan the body functions of a character or other life forms, and can also diagnose ailments up to a point (determined by the Mission Master). It also contains a small medikit which any Star Fleet officer can use to repair 1D2 damage per game turn.

Psychotricorder
A specialized unit which can be used to scan a person's memory up to 24 hours prior to the scanning. It must be operated by a properly trained Star Fleet Psychotech.

Sciences
Capable of sensing, measuring and analysing (through the electromagnetic spectrum) for energy sources, life forms, and force fields, determining both density and volume.

-access file NCC-592/PER-18b-

USS Janus NCC-805
Planetary Exploration Report 18b supplemental
Stardate 2271.3.22

Supplemental
Strange radiation observed surrounding Coxa II, to a distance of 12,000km. The radiation was not observed in previous scans of the system.

Type and structure of radiation unknown. Observable effects are:
 1. Warp engines are drained and damaged when used within the radiation zone. Readings suggest that the radiation itself acts almost like a tractor beam for energy, freezing and constricting warp energy flows but not physical matter. Traditional impulse power is not affected.
 2. The speed of certain biological functions are rapidly increased, mostly relating to natural healing and growth. Standard pharmaceuticals have less effect and spoil quickly. The changes to natural humanoid functions appear to be harmless, but healing will slow and adverse side effects may become apparent in very long term exposure.
 3. The radiation appears to be directed into outer space from a specific site on the planet surface. The exact location is unknown, since the radiation also appears to "cloak" itself from scanners, making pinpoint accuracy all but impossible. However, the general is known to be somewhere west of the village recently explored, and south of the away mission's landing site.
Unfortunately, in order to stay out of the field of radiation the ship must orbit at outside 12,000km, placing the ship outside of communicator and transporter range (10,000km).

Planetary Exploration Report 18b, supplemental to the supplement
The Coxan village holds an ancient alien artifact, possibly of the Slaver Empire, which they call the "Rod of Life." While charged, the device emits a short-range field of radiation that appears to counter the effects of the unknown radiation, and even increases healing and growth rates of organic material.
