Hey,
Just a heads up: I'm away for work for a few days. So if I'm quiet you know why. I might be able to get online. Don't know yet.
Either way, I'm back on Wednesday.
If I'm holding things up, please NPC my character for me. Thanks.

Haha! I did try to find an animated gif with the Edosian firing his phaser, but was unsuccessful. I guess sooner or later I'll need to look into an easy way of making my own gifs so I don't have to rely on trawling google searches.

Hi Star,

Please remind me:

1) Are all the villains accounted for at this point?

2) Do we care if the Slaver Outpost is destroyed?? Should we try to stop the self-destruct sequence, assuming it can be done?
    • -I'm assuming the outpost is isolated, so it's destruction shouldn't harm any Coxans.

-Its end might possibly be a good way for the Coxan society to move on from the recent chaos of offworlders meddling with them.

-We have the Rod of Life to give back to the Coxans.

-Its destruction will prevent Romulans or pirates from trying to raid it again.
The only reason I can see to save the Slaver outpost is so that its anti-technology radiation continues to protect the Coxans from some offworld incursions, but obviously not all.

I apologize if I'm missing the plot.

Starbeard wrote: Nadix also weighs the positives and negatives of allowing the Slaver Outpost to be destroyed:
  • While the Rod of Life rests on its podium altar in the village, it channels a low-emission growth radiation that has sustained the agriculture and the longevity of the Coxan race for thousands of years; without it they will have famine until they learn new farming techniques, and their life spans will shrink from hundreds of years to dozens.
  • When placed on one of the podiums at the Slaver Outpost, its doors can be unlocked and the secrets within revealed. Such knowledge would undoubtedly benefit the Federation.
  • However, the Rod has a safeguard. As long as it is not resting on one of the podiums, the Slaver Outpost locks down, protected by a force field, and projects a catastrophic radiation around the planet depletes warp energy, and as a side effect slowly withers life. It is assumed that this was designed as a defense against interstellar attacks.
  • The Coxans would not miss or possibly even notice the destruction of the Outpost, since for them it is a Forbidden Temple, visited only on pain of exile or death, and only the higher priests are given knowledge of its secret location. Furthermore, its removal would negate any incentive for competing star civilizations to interfere with the planet in the future.
Thanks!
So, if I understand this correctly:
If we bring the Rod of Life to the village, then the famine is averted. The Slaver Outpost self destructs and its "safeguard" ends too: it no longer projects the catastrophic radiation that slowly withers life. The loss of the outpost has no negative effect on Coxan society, and one positive one: Romulans and pirates would never return here to interfere with the Coxan's development. And, any villains currently lurking near the outpost, waiting in ambush, are tidily killed.

If we use the Rod of Life to attempt to rob the Slaver outpost of its technological riches, then a possibility exists that we fail to avert the self-destruct sequence. In that event, the Janus' landing party are killed and the Rod of Life is also lost, causing famine to the Coxan people and ending their civilization.

Star, are there any inaccuracies in the above?

Yes, that is all fully accurate within the limits of known facts. I think the only current unknowns requiring investigation are:

1) whether the Rod of Life, on its altar, will continue to sustain its positive radiation for the village after the outpost is destroyed.

2) the extent of the outpost's self destruction, such as the size of the blast and whether it will produce any radiation fallout.

3) whether the Romulan Commander was in fact bluffing about the self-destruct.

Are there means to investigate 1 and 2 (before the self-destruction)?

There certainly are. The current state of the temple has not been investigated, though it was clear upon arrival that the Commander was just there. When previously in the village the altar was in the middle of the temple, safe and sound. Determining the status of the altar, and its energy source, will probably take up to 10 minutes, 20 at most. (under the usual rule: a successful MN check gives quick/automatic results, failed takes 1 turn, and a big botch takes longer than usual).

I will allow a difficult tricorder analysis of probable effects of the explosion using the same rules (1 turn/2 turns/no info). Performing the analysis will be easier and more definitive at the site, then inside the outpost, and then most effective at the command terminal.

Good thinking about the Romulans. These are the TOS kind.

Good idea.

Starbeard, I think that phasers set to overload scream before they explode. Is there a way to safely stop the explosion after the screaming?

Also, if there are any Coxans with us, maybe they know how to avoid or scare off these animals?

Yes, but risky. It will take a normal DX save, 3D6 at or under DX. If you fail, you will have to throw the weapon away from the party and allow it to explode. The explosion radius will be small enough that it won't harm anyone in the party.
