DCC Lankhmar (Waitlist)

#1 Post by drpete »

Come with me to the City of the Black Toga, the greatest Metropolis of Nehwon, and home to the dubious heroes, Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. Adventure awaits!

Should there be interest, I'd like to run a game of DCC using the new Lankmar additions. Characters would start at 1st level... human warriors, thieves or wizards (so there would be no funnel), who are or become involved in the shady criminal world of Lankhmar. We would use fleeting luck and the banter rule to encourage some antics.

Overall, I imagine the game to be a city game about heists, getting into trouble and trying to get back out of it. When the game gets cooking, I'd like to go at a post rate of every 1-2 days.

No experience, either with DCC (a somewhat gonzo version of D&D, somewhat toned down here) or Lankhmar expected or required...

For those of you unfamiliar with dcc, I think you will find it fairly easy to get into, and invite you to try it out

Some features of DCC:
  • D20 style saves & initiative
  • D20- lite skill system, with rolls vs DC, but no skill points
  • Extensive crit/ fumble system
  • 6 stats- wisdom & charisma are combined into 'personality', and a 'luck' stat is added. Luck can be "burned" to improve important rolls.
  • Improved power level & hp for 1st level
  • Wizards get several spells, which they can potentially use more than once per day (they make a spell roll with variable results)
  • Warriors get to perform "mighty deeds" which lets them try whatever cool combat maneuvers
  • Thief skills are integrated with skill system, and they choose a track... assassin, thief or mobster for skill progression.
The first files for the Lankhmar kickstarter are starting to come out, so come try it with me...
Some features of Lankhmar DCC
  • Restriction on classes... human thieves, warriors and wizards only
  • No alignment... you are all rogues
  • Background system gives extra flavor... characters might be failed wizard apprentices, or have healing skills, or be a former pirate... they also might have enemies or be under a curse. Luck will decide
  • Fleeting luck enhances the luck economy with a hero/ fate point system
Enhanced non magical healing to compensate for the lack of clerics

I'm in!

New to Unseen Servent so starting out as a player will help me learn the forum.
Usually hang out on RPG Geek and have run some PBF Games there.

No direct experience with DCC but I have read all of the Lankhmar books and I love the setting. (and Thieves World)

Good with D&D mechanics so I am reading DCC now.

I will play a thief for this one if I can although I don't mind playing any class.

I'm pretty heavily committed right now- but this sounds like fun. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and let you know if I'm in or not.

I'm in a similar place as Urson. Not really familiar with DCC, I'd have to buy a copy (currently on offer at the moment at drivethrurpg.com). I am currently playing in the MCC Gam'A Zone game, which is my only exposure.

Read the novels a long time ago, so reasonably familiar with the setting.

Ctcharger, welcome aboard! And welcome to Unseen Servant! I think you'll find a lot of like- minded folks here :) As for classes, thief sounds quite appropriate, though we may want to wait to see how the dice fall :)

Urson, you'd certainly be welcome if you decide you're interested, but i totally understand about being overcommitted. I'm sure if it gets some wind in its sails there will be chances to add new players, too.

Shaidar, there's as free version of the rules (technically the beta, and it has been through a few revisions) if you want to get as sense of the system here:

Shaidar, the rules we'll use don't have "Mercurial Magic" but rather many of the spells will have a "stipulation"... maybe a material component, or it can only be cast at night, or things of that nature. Each spell gets a random stipulation.

Each character also gets a random advantage and disadvantage.

To get a sense of what the characters might look like, check out...

It certainly does :)

It could really be any number, really. Obviously, the source material doesn't involve a big group, but I figured we could give the recruitment thread a little time to see what happens. I'm imagining 3-6 players.

Is there a PC tab specifically suited for rules like DCC? The one I have been messing around is based on older versions of D&D where you had 5 categories of saving throws.

Nope, the only character sheet in the dice roller is not really optimized for other games. I think I'm going to dig up a text character sheet to use.

DCC and Lankhmar? Two of my faves (played the game and own a dead tree print, have all the books by Fritz).

I’m in. But...I’m on a well deserved break at the beach. I get home Tuesday night and can start a character the following Wednesday.

A rogue for me.

Mind if I use the Lankhmar thief pregen?

Is there a specific time period we are in?
(May not matter but thought I would ask)

BD, welcome aboard!

CT, I'm fine with that, or we can generate your own (which we can arrange in a few different ways). As far as timeline, I'm going to say, for now, at least, that it's not going to matter. I'm I'm the process of (re)-reading the books, though, so I may evolve on that point.

Sounds good, I will try to generate one just for practice if nothing else. I read them in the last year, towards the end the quality dropped off but most of it I really enjoyed. Even bought the board game, I may get them on kindle also. Also bought the Savage Worlds and D&D supplements.

Cool.

The first part would be to roll each stat, in order, with 3d6. You can do one swap, switching one stat for another, if you want (to optimize your thief, basically). To avoid pain, let's say if it ends up with more negative modifiers than positive, you can reroll the whole thing.

You then roll birth augur/ lucky roll as per the rules (though some, focused on clerical magic or the funnel get rerolled).

Next comes determining place of origin (choose or roll 1d8 between
Lankhmar, Land of Eight Cities, Cold Waste, Eastern Lands, or Mingol Steppes)
Roll for "benison" and "doom" (1d100, each, modified by luck)

Choose class

Determine languages

Equipment, etc

For dice, use the dice roller. Campaign ID is 682
