Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures (CLOSED)
Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures (CLOSED)
Anyone up for a campaign using the Beyond the Wall ruleset?
Beyond the Wall is pretty much Basic D&D set up not to model Epic Fantasy, but more of the talented-young-folks-get-in over-their-head vibe of, say, the Chronicles of Prydain, or pretty much any folktale, fairy tale, or juvenile lit fantasy. As one reviewer said, "It's more Hobbit than Lord of the Rings."
The characters all grew up together in a small village, and character creation generates their history as well as attributes. Chargen is done collectively, and your rolls can provide other characters with benefits, based on past shared adventures. So, no enigmatic lone wolf-types who never reveal their troubling pasts. The other characters were present and involved in your troubling past! It's a very flavorful and inspiring form of chargen.
There are a couple other little tweaks, like Fortune points, and magic works a little differently (it's pretty great). The changes are nothing that can't be covered in a a post or two.
Helpful links!
Here's a pretty good review, if you'd like some information: http://talesofthegrotesqueanddungeonesq ... tures.html.
Here's an interview I did with the creators: http://abominablefancy.blogspot.com/201 ... liams.html
You won't need the books to play the game, but if'n you're interested, you can get the pdf here: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/1 ... Adventures
I'm hoping for 5-6 players who can post more-or-less every weekday.

This looks like a type of game I have been wanting to play/run...less combat centric and more about the lives of those involved (rp). Count me in.

Re: Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures
that'd be out of control fast... imagine just trying to catch up with everyone's initial post in the campaign....

Seven sounds fine! I mean, how could I say 'no' to such a star-studded roster?
While we're waiting for the campaign folder to get set up, we might as well begin chargen.
To begin, please select a character archetype, below. The archetype will determine which set of charts you roll on to determine your character's history, skills, and abilities. The first twelve choices are the standard village kids. Then there are some options for nobles and demihumans, if anyone wants to play one of those.
Villagers:
Self-taught Mage
Untested Thief
Village Hero
Witch’s Prentice
Would-Be Knight
Young Woodsman
Assistant Beast-Keeper
Devout Acolyte
Fae Foundling
Heir to a Legend
Local Performer
Reformed Bully
Nobles:
Apprentice Court Sorcerer
Forgotten Child
Future Warlord
Gifted Dilettante
Nobleman’s Wild Daughter
Novice Templar
Fantasy Races:
Dwarven Adventurer
Dwarven Rune Caster
Eleven Highborn
Elven Ranger
Halfling Outrider
Halfling Vagabond
