[Closed] Wardens of the North (Homebrew 1E)

#1 Post by Landifarne »

I am looking to begin a campaign based upon my homebrew world of Holun. This campaign will start with brand new (level 1) characters, and should begin during the last week of November (the week of Thanksgiving). Players would be expected to make fairly detailed posts a minimum of once per week, and I would do the same (but not more than twice per week). As the DM, I will never be flakey and I will attempt to make the experience as descriptive/detailed/immersive as possible. [To me, "fairly detailed" posts are a paragraph or more of your character's actions and, to a lesser degree, thoughts. I don't like too much description of a character's internal thoughts/conflict, but a little bit adds some flavor.] Likewise, posts will have to use normal syntax and follow the rules of grammar. I am very picky regarding these issues, and will drop a player (after repeated warnings) that does not follow these conventions.

Die rolling on your part would be on your honor (you can simply state your result), or with the roller. I, myself, will use the roller.

My world is a fairly low magic one, where spellcasters generally don't broadcast their professions and 0-level humans are skeptical of whether magic truly exists. Magic items are relatively weak, but they are not incredibly rare. The campaign will begin in a 10th century, English/Scandanavian/Northern European setting and will initially allow for human, dwarven and half-orc characters. Halflings, gnomes and elves would be allowed if/when the party eventually begins to explore more of Western Ornfal (the main continent). The game would begin in either the town of Rifford, or in the hamlet of Highwold, and I am very open to having individuals and separate groups moving about independently and/or starting at different times/locales. Separate threads will be created if such is required. I try not to pull too many punches, but I will fudge things behind the scenes (ideally, you would never know) to make the game enjoyable for all.

Anyone having read my campaign journal and workshop threads at DF may still participate, but he/she should inform me so that I may change things up. That person should also avoid using any prior knowledge for his/her personal gain.

I welcome young gamers, as long as their parent also plays and the young one can write his/her own posts. Although my own daughter (10-yo) is not likely to be playing in the campaign, I would judge her to be mature enough to participate (I game with her fairly regularly) under supervision. So, if anyone has a younger player that is interested, he or she is very welcome.

I am willing to start the campaign with only a few players, as my introductory pieces are ideal for small groups. We can add more players as time goes on.

I'll provide more information here over the next couple of weeks, leading up to the start. Please post here if you are interesed, or wish to get more info prior to making a decision on whether or not to join...

The campaign region:
The campaign begins in and about the Djorsalng Valley- a large, forested mountain valley bounded to the north by the hamlet of Highwold, to the south by the village of Rifford, to the west by the Djorsalng Reach, and to the east by the Immrik Mountains. This entire region is claimed by King Lornall of Norlund, and is held in the king's name by Banner Knight Hrothen Duralain (of Highwold) and Eorl Arli Hroxim (Lord of County Osterlic, centered upon the town of Rifford).

This is a map of Western Ornfal, giving an indication of where our campaign area is located (upper right corner). Norlund was established by disaffected nobles that sailed along the northern coasts of Ceorland and founded the small city of Ostgall some 150 years ago. They are typical (RL) Normans in character, and have traditional foes in the savage barbarians to the north- the Suevi, Juti and Friuli, and in the Brugundi petty kings to the south:

I've sent a PM to ToniXX to create a campaign thread. Once that is up I will post more game-specific material there (maps, descriptions of the campaign region, etc.)

This post will serve as a running list for those accepted into the game, and I will edit it accordingly. So far, we have:

1) NJWilliam
2) Ythgar
3) Pulpatoon
4) PyroArrow
5) FreebirdFootbagging
6) imswayze

Once the campaign thread is up, and I have presented a background and the two possible starting locations, you can begin thinking about character creation. Possible character classes include: C/D/F/R/MU/I/T and any non-evil elignments are fine. I am open to having a PC be a barbarian (some NPCs will be such), but I would modify/nerf such heavily. Please remember that starting characters would generally be humans, but that having a dwarf and/or a half-orc in the party would be acceptable (albeit the inhabitants of the region would not treat a half-orc favorably and would be skittish around a dwarf).

I'm on the West Coast and, once the game begins, will probably be posting on Friday nights and Sunday evenings.

[EDIT: I'll keep adding people until we hit SEVEN. Anyone after that will be placed on a waiting list. I can also break a large group into two smaller groups, if need be. Details such as that can be worked out in a couple weeks, leading up to the start date.]

Hi, I've looked at my schedule and hope there's still room to join - weekly posting seems great! I will roll a character whenever you're ready for that.

That would be great. Riftstone states that he will have to drop out, so you would be the sixth player. Currently, we have 2 fighters, a thief, a druid and a magic user. A cleric would be great, but not absolutely necessary as long as the druid can take a bit of healing upon himself. I allow characters to heal each other for 1 HP after a fight, so this also will play a role. I think a fighter, a ranger (I nerf rangers), or a cleric would work best.

I'll update the list located above.

OK, Freebird! But you'll be the last! I'm closing the list as of now, since I'm worried that we'll have too many if I continue bring people on. Anyone else will be placed on a waiting list...

A player dropped from the game, so there is now an opening. Please read the description/requirements in this thread's first few postings before requesting to participate.

I would love to join, if you are taking anymore action. It will be my first in a long time, but I have a very flexible schedule, and will pick up the gist quickly. I am not exactly sure what ''proper syntax'' involves, but I will pick that up fast too. My grammar is nearly flawless...lol.

I would run any class of character, but preferably not a magic-user. I need some armor, maybe hps, and SOME combat abilities to have the most fun.

imswayze,

I'd be happy to have you come on! Please have a look at the campaign thread and start a character (I recommend a fighter or cleric, but a nerfed ranger would also fit well).

I've added you to the usergroup list, so you can post there.

I'm working on a dwarven cleric. A rare breed. I'll have him online by tomorrow. Sweet.

That's cool. It'll be good to have a demi-human in the mix.
