Frekken

The frogmonn pulls a 50-foot rope from his pack and hands one end to Belial. "Will this help?" he croaks. "Attach it to ladder--and up we go!!"

Belial

Most excellent, my dude! Belial flies up to the opening and lands, pausing for a minute to listen before he begins attaching the rope. If there's no sign of trouble, he'll tie off the rope and drop it to the others.

Bart, MH

"I have a coil of rope if that doesn't do it, its to bad we can't dig to that door... can we?"

Is it feasible to dig to the door?

Belial flies up and enters the edge of the tube after listening and determining that there is nothing of trouble present. He secures one end of Frekken’s rope to the ladder and drops it to the ground with a few feet to spare. The ladder is positioned so one may crawl along the top side and use the ladder as a rudimentary catwalk. The flying baboon backs away from the open cylinder and lands next to his comrades.

As you discuss digging down to the door, you collectively determine that the towers originally stood 150 feet above the ground, but after millennia of debris settlement, the base and the entry door is around 70 feet below the desert floor. Add in another 40-some foot for the hill, and you would have to dig down over 100 feet to reach the top of the door.

Actions?

...

EDIT: The ladder is steep enough to use as a ladder, not a horizontal catwalk.

Blixx

"We creeping in? Have our masks ready then." Blixx gets a grenade ready. "First sign of trouble, we pop smoke and fall back?" Blixx asks clearly excited.

Frank Rock; Veteran Human

Frank chambers a round into his Rifle and keeps it at the ready while nodding to Blixx; "That sounds like a good idea to me pal".

Hand over hand, Bart ascends the rope to enter the crooked tower, followed by Jack. When Bart reaches the lower edge of the opening, he probes the dark interior with his echolocation ability. He ‘sees’ 50 feet into the tower until it stops at a solid deck with an open hatch. Beyond the open hatch, Bart detects two voids, one vertical and another in the horizontal direction. There is some movement in the vertical void, but he is unable to discern any details.

Jack grasps the rope and prepares to follow Bart once he exits onto the ladder.

Frank loads his rifle and waits his turn to climb the rope.

Blixx prepares a smoke grenade and slowly hovers into the air matching Bart’s ascent.

Belial
The baboon flies up and lands on the upper lip of the tower like a gargoyle in a Hawaiian shirt. He waits, ready to join the action if there's trouble.

Frekken stays at the rear of the group, bow drawn to watch the group's tails until they're safely ascended. When everyone else is up, and assuming the coast is clear, he follows after.

Jack once it is clear below will climb down the ladder and step to the side if there is room.

Blixx waits to see what happens.

Is my night vision of any use here?

Frank Rock

If given the all-clear sign, Frank will sling his rifle after pushing in the safety and then clamber aboard the ladder....

Bart is the first to descend the old ladder, using his echolocation for reconnaissance. The ladder is slightly rusted, but solid, and he makes his way down to the metal deck fixed with a open hatch at the lower end. He stays inside the ladder well and continues to probe the interior of the old tower. The vertical shaft continues down beyond his sensing range, and he gets a better sense of the variations on the different surfaces.

The west side of the vertical shaft is smooth and presumably metal like the other towers you have encountered. The east side contains an uneven mass of a less dense material. Part of a ladder is evident under the uneven mass, indicating that a ladder is embedded inside the material. The void just below the deck and to the west is uneven and also filled, at the bottom, with a less dense material.

The deck emits a slight vibration and, after a while, Bart detects the possible source. His echolocation senses several moving objects the same size as the nocturnal bees you defeated near this tower. They are slowly pacing back and forth below the deck, but are not moving towards the open hatch. When he detects these moving objects, he signals to Jack that he should pause at the upper end of the ladder. Jack in turn halts Frank and Frekken before they ascend the rope. Blixx continues to hover outside, unable to use his night vision with the ambient daylight. Belial stays perched on the upper edge of the tower, waiting for a signal to enter the tower.

Blixx

Blixx keeps an eye out for any external threats, but his day sight is a wee bit off. (I do have sunglasses, LOL)

"Maybe we should secure a rope to the ladder?" Blixx whispers

Frank slings his rifle and says; "I'll secure it"; and will proceed to do so, unless someone tells him not too....
