Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
4 sleeping, 1 dead.
The situation is that they will continue to fight if the party continues to attack. They are definitely retreating to their lair (even the four just appearing on the scene having heard the change in tone from their compatriots), but don't want to offer an attack of opportunity. So yes, if Zo wants to slay a sleeping nightman he'll have no trouble doing so.

Cool, that's what I thought & my intent was to start slaying sleeping night-men which is what Zo will do. Do you want me to edit my post so it is just the first part?

Yes, please do in case I forget when I'm doing the writeup
Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Lucas nods in thanks to Zo. He gets the feeling that the fighting isn't over, and he rushes to put on his armor. But he hears Zo's plea, and decides to help him dispatch the sleepers.

Yikes. That's truly a dreadful set of rolls.Storm11 wrote:Tempus slings again the nightman retreating away from him in a panic.

Clarence, unhappy with his injury, swats out at the creature in front of him.

once again consistently the worst combat roller in all the land.

Lumenor descends from the tree, but does not withdraw his blade from its sheath. Instead he covers his allies with his bow, an arrow nocked and ready to fire if one of the withdrawing creatures advances once more. "Do what you must, I will provide cover." he replies coolly.

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
The nightmen beat a retreat towards their lair. But the animals don't let them off easy. Azor and Clarence attack. The dog, flush with adrenaline, misses wildly. Its neck is sliced open by a defensive attack from an apprehensive nightman! -5 hp
Clarence advances determinedly on his foe. The nightman swings its axe defensively, more to fend off the bear's attacks than harm it. He succeeds in parrying the ursine claws and bite.
Lumenor, once he's sure his attacker is retreating, climbs down from his tree and watches over Zo and Lucas, who dispatch two more slumbering nightmen. Tempus unleashes an errant sling bullet at a retreating humanoid.
All able-bodied nightmen, save the ones fighting Clarence and Azor, are free of melee, and run swiftly back to their hole.
Two are about to scamper away, but are within missile range, two are sleeping, and two others are engaged with Azor and Clarence. The others have fled and are out of range.
Date: 3 Grasses (April), Year 44
Time: 04:42, about 50 minutes before first daylight
Conditions: 36F, 9 mph breeze from the southeast
Known Spells in Effect: 4 nightmen sleeping through 4:45
Light bearers: Campfire, 60' in all directions
Injury status: Tempus, Lucas lightly wounded; Clarence and Azor moderately wounded

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Zo continues to slay sleeping night-men until they are all dead. "There are a lot less of them now", and he smiles at Lucas (for once not seeming to care that he is a human).
Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Lucas smiles back...until he sees Azor getting wounded. He rushes to the aid of the dog with his spear.

Tempus fires another bullet at the fleeing nightmen, thinking that taking them out now rather than later when they are with their kin is wiser and easier reducing numbers below.
[1d6] = 5 : [1d20+5] = 8+5 = 13 : [1d4+1] = 4+1 = 5 : [1d100] = 23
Azor attacks his nightmen too.

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Azor, driven into a mouth-foaming rage, continues his attack. He misses badly!
Fumbled, but result was 'drop weapon' so no effect.
The war dog moves so wildly his attacker cannot with its stone axe. It howls in fear as it continues to retreat, especially when Lucas joins the battle. The boy, in his nightwear, attacks with a spear but the cold affects him and his stabs are ineffective.
Clarence continues to bear down on his opponent, grabbing, slicing and hugging with a hairy claw. It gasps in pain but manages to cut a minor wound in Clarence's shoulder. -2 hp. The nightman is very near death, letting out a weak, hollow howl.
Lumenor continues to stand guard (I'm assuming this action continues, but let me know if otherwise).
Tempus loads a bullet in his sling and lines up a shot. He cracks the skull of one of the two fleeing nightmen. It stumbles, but continues its run and disappears beyond the clearing along with its companion.
Zo will be able to dispatch the last sleeping nightman this coming round. Azor and Lucas are in melee with a moderately wounded one, and Clarence is in battle with another that is close to death. All others are out of range and ostensibly back near/at their lair. Actions?

Tempus will put his sling into his belt and draw his Scimitar, and move to engage the dogs opponent.

Melee combat is clearly not the Druids forte.
Azor harasses his own opponent.

And Clarence continues to maul his own as well.

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Lumenor assesses the risk of hitting one of his allies as too great, despite his attempts to shift into a more favorable firing position. He slips his bow over his shoulder and draws his basket-hilted long blade, then attempts to drive it into the more badly wounded of the two night-men whom are presently engaged.

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Azor finally gets himself under control, launching a savage attack at his opponent. It barely has time to scream in pain as it dies. Luckily, Lucas' attack had poor initiative or the aftermath of him spearing Azor would have been bad!
The nightman facing Clarence, near death, slashes weakly at the bear and wounds him yet again. -1 hp. Lumenor, having seen enough, shoulders his bow and demonstrates his skill with his longsword. The last nightman, now only 20' from the clearing, had no chance. It falls too.
Zo finishes his work, dispatching the final sleeping nightman.
And the battle ends. Seven more nightmen lie dead, their coin purses unexplored. From the direction of the nightmen's lair, beyond the light of the campfire, the party hears a loud, defiant howl. Will they come back in greater numbers? Or has the party proven too formidable a foe?
Actions?

Lucas rushes to put on his armor in case more come back.
"Guys, I think we should go back to town to heal. Some of us are hurt and another battle could be bad."

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Zo starts checking over the night-men he just killed for coins and items other than stone axes. While he's doing that: There are at least 6 left, probably more, and my magic is spent. It will be daylight soon, but Azor & Clarence can't take to the trees to hide. We could try to bluff them with a challenge of our own, but I think it wisest to move away before they re-gather their courage.
Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Tempus concurs. ”We should head away from the flames of the fire once we have made sure it is secure, and head back along the way towards Alleborg. We might not need to go all the way back, we could camp half way perhaps and I can ask for more healing magic upon the morrow. Take whatever monies we can find and let us depart this place. Lucas, lead on!”
The small dreadlocked halfling checks upon his animal friends and gently pets the pair of them. ”Good boys,” he says soothingly, before gathering what pouches are left and putting on his armour and gathering his gear.

Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Lumenor nods in agreement with the proposal, wipes his blade clean and then returns it to its scabbard. He observes the looting process, but doubts they will find much of value on any of these creatures. "Perhaps it was an error in judgment to set up camp so near the entrance to their lair. Let us make for Alleborg." he says.
Re: Chapter 16 - Tempus' recruiting drive
Zo will go with the party once he has finished burglarizing the bodies.
