I think we're talked out, right?

Plan is:
  • Half the Thringrinir go with us and show us where the dragon sleeps.
  • We pray the damn thing is sleeping.
  • When we get there, we take the Ray Stance approach and "Get 'em"
  • Bromric uses his sword's light spell to cast on the dragon's eyes and render it temporarily blind.
  • We do our best to fan out around the beast, interspersing Thringrinir between PCs, so that we aren't clumped against a breath weapon attack and so that we all can hit it.
  • We hit it for as much damage-per-second as possible.
  • If we survive, we take the treasure already received and then Bromric can arrange final details with the queen (relative living spaces, method of aid against creatures above, recruiting one or two Thringrinir retainers).
  • If we don't survive, we hope that Kennit can hide long enough to escape and tell everyone that we at least fought a @#$@ dragon. :D

Bromric runs in, brandishing his sword and yelling, "Leeeeroy Jenkins!!"

Agreed, but with the possibility of backing down if he's NOT sleeping and we can't get a good encirclement approach.

EDIT: Gilgamesh will expect some dragon loot, or some other reward for this extremely risky undertaking. "Treasure already received" is ours to walk away with already. Not facing a dragon for coin already in my pocket.

Right! :D Good thing the Thringrinir don't value precious metals. 8-)

Perthrin will cast sleep whenever appropriate, shoot arrows as appropriate. Mostly though, he is right behind you all. ;)

June 14, 1 VC - 11:50am

The party collects themselves for the next stage of their journey: further into the depths of the mountain. Within a half hour, the queen has neatly divided her followers into two groups--one remaining with her, and one passing below with the party. Twenty one of the thringrinir are to accompany the adventurers, including Jerdan, who will act as their leader and liaison between them and the party.

Twenty minutes of swift travel takes the group down through winding chimneys and irregularly-stepped passages, the surfaces increasingly slick with cool moisture. The dwarves have the sense that these passages are somewhat to the southwest of the bulk of the mountain itself, and they are moving away from the edifice's volcanic core. There are numbers of unworked limestone layers compounded here, through which most of the passages have been eroded and the war party clambers in nearly silent advance.

Finally, a short drop opens out into a low-ceilinged but broad cavern with smooth walls and floor that was likely once submerged. It stretches well out of the range of perthrin and kennit's sight, and as they stand at one end Jerdan holds up a hand to signal a halt. One of the thringrinir pads silently on bare soles ahead, just out of the range of the lantern-light, and returns soon after, shaking his head. He and Jerdan exchange a handful of words before Jerdan turns to Bromric and whispers, "Unfortunate news. The Master rests, but does not sleep. He is taken by odd fevers at times, during which he does not see what is around him truly. He is in such a fit--we may be able to advance close before he detects us, and has not yet sensed our approach." He looks to Bromric for a decision.

Is he sleeping? (1-4) [1d6] = 6

You need to be able to see where you're casting it--and the chamber is definitely outside of range. (also, you're sure the dragon himself wouldn't be affected by it, given the stories going around about him).

"I do not think we quail in our resolve," answers Bromric. "It is most imperative that we damage his as much as we can in the initial moments. Is there room to surround him? Can the Thringrinir move silently to his far side? If you can get in position without rousing him, we can still strike on my signal. I suspect he may be more alert to the smell of dwarf than of your kind."

Is a light source already in use, or is it assumed that Kennit has a torch lit? Kennit's a mean shot with bow if we wanted to try a missile strike. That would also separate us a bit more, and make the breath weapon less damaging (hopefully)

Looks like from the description, we're assuming a lantern is lit for Kennit's benefit (as the only non-infravision person) and that we stopped at a far enough distance for the light to not alert the dragon while the Thringrinir scouted ahead.

I thought about Kennit sneaking ahead as a hobbit (because sending in the hobbit to distract the dragon seems eminently Tolkien) but the -4 penalty for doing it in the dark is not worth it. (I'm assuming the dragon has infravision and can act in the dark normally, even though the books don't specify that.)

The Thringrinir don't have missile weapons, so I'd rather bring 25 melee attacks to bear than 4 missile attacks, supposing we can get close enough while it is in fugue. If the Thringrinir don't think they can flank-surround or get close enough while in fugue state, then a missile round followed by the charge to melee might be the best we can do for surprise.

Jerdan shakes his head. "The only other entrance would be from above--we can try this path, but it will be treacherous to enter this way and we will not all be able to come in at once. If we enter, however quietly, through the main entrance, he will know." He considers for a long time, and sighs. "I think we should either all rush in and strike quickly, and spread out to surround him once we enter the room and avoid his breath, or half should drop in from above. We can drop in a group upon him without dying, but it will slow down our assault as we take time to recover."

Bromric mulls this, fingers absently fiddling with the grey portions of his beard. "We assault together, then. We can fire the first volley of arrows as the Thringrinir begin to charge, wounding him as best we can before his initial move against you, then we all engage with axe and sword until the beast is done. Make sure we spread out as much as possible."

"Ehrm... just one more thing," says Bromric. He takes a knee and bows his head earnestly. "Falles, we stand here in your realm. We face this foe, this ancient enemy of our people, this slayer of so many of our kin..." he prays in supplication to the ancient dwarven deity for any aid which he might offer in the face of this daunting task, and that it might lead to the safe return of dwarves within the mountain.

The thringrinir, who seem to be a fairly non-religious folk, stand around awkwardly as Bromric kneels and prays.
