Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
You can just pull the rope up--no need to cut it. Probably the only safe place to have collapsed--far enough from the end of the passage not to cause the floor to be endangered or compromised--was down by the stairwell. You could collapse the ceiling down into the stairs with a few minutes of work. Orrin had plenty of time to have figured that out.

I am just going to point out that the gnolls have routinely carried longbows, and their are seven of them. Most of us are wounded enough that we will go down with one shot.Zhym wrote:Yeah. I don't see a scenario here where Niles gets another hour of sleep.
I think the decision of whether to stay and fight or run away depends on whether we can pull the collapsing tunnel trick, whether the northmen want to fight or run, and how much of a tactical advantage we have from being 20' above our attackers. We have something like cover and this should be a pretty defensible position assuming we cut the rope down.
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Niles is grateful that he counts as "full cover" by remaining curled in his bedroll on the floor.
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Sure enough, the gnolls are carrying a combination of longbows and shortbows. Two longbows, four shortbows, and the remaining one has a spear.

I vote back inside, where we can keep their superior numbers from being too great an advantage. If we could get cover, I might be willing to trade missiles; Lug is pretty mean with that bow of his, and our ACs should be better.
Or how about retreat back to the entrance, but position ourselves where we can fire at anyone climbing up over the edge; that would keep us safe from their missiles while giving us clear shots at them before they can close with us. We could even set 2 teams, one here and one at the top of the stairs (unless we just want to collapse the staircase).

Lug chances a quick look at his friends. None of them are in any shape for a fight right now. Neither is he, really—though that's never stopped him before.
"Run," he tells his friends. "Leave the rope," he adds quietly. "If we're lucky, they'll follow—and Orrin can bring the tunnel down on their heads!"
To the patrol outside, he yells, "Hah! You want us? Come and get us!"
With that, he turns and runs.

Bertram nods and flees as well.
Good idea leaving the rope as a temptation. If we can catch them climbing up, we might stage a counter-offensive that would even the odds.

Kieros and his companions smile in response to this ruse, grabbing their goods and heading down the tunnel as well.

Niles sees Lug running and curses under his breath. He springs from his bedding and grabs it up in his arms, fleeing quickly after, Ferris bounding along at his heels.

Galen joins the general exodus, fitting a stone to his sling as he goes.

Shaking her head and chuckling, Krysta follows her fleeing companions.
Winter is coming...
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
The party quickly reaches the top of the narrow stairs. They can either descend back into the maze of residences below, or continue along the passage that leads on. Kieros notes, in low tones, "We explored down this way before we descended--many sections beyond have collapsed or are dangerous to traverse quickly, but there might be a defensible position or a path through that we could use to escape. Below--there are many paths but also many unknown dangers."
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Are there any sounds of pursuit?
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
From where you are it's not clear if they're pursuing, since they were starting in an odd spot compared to you. If they are pursuing, they have not yet reached the ledge from which the rope dangles.

Hearing Keiros' suggestions, Bertram nods. "Let's find a defensible position. A collapsed section might be the thing we need to create a bottleneck or limit passage of those ogres."
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Is this the spot Orrin found where he could bring the tunnel down?
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Yes, in your current position (with either down or further into these halls as options in front of you) the collapsable section would drop the roof down into the stairs and cut off all access, but movement to and from the end of the passage where the rope dangles should, theoretically, not be completely cut off by such a move, though it would likely narrow the corridor significantly.
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
So from this spot we'd cut off our own retreat?
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
Retreat DOWN would be impossible. Retreat further in (toward the sections Kieros noted were half-collapsed and treacherous) would be possible, as would retreat down the rope if it weren't obstructed.
Re: Expedition - Lug/Exploration - May 20, 1 VC
But we wouldn't be able to collapse the tunnel on our pursuers in any case.
Lug considers the options. "In," he decides. "We'' have to to be careful, but so will the gronks chasing us. If they're chasing us."
