#1 Post by Keehnelf »

This thread will capture the songs and stories that make up the cultural traditions of Vaul, as they are composed and told.

I will make the posts, and include one item per post--it will feature information like date first presented, content, and general reception of the tales and songs.

Lug and the Broken Spider Legs was a shorty, catchy drinking song composed by Zampari in April, 1 VC on commission from Lug himself. It features several repetitive verses designed to easily expand on the structure to add more content as the singer desires, but the original makes reference to the exploits of Lug, crushing spiders and breaking their legs with his bare hands, convincing a forest spirit to give him a lock of her hair, and throwing a rock so hard it killed two goblins (one on the bounce).

The reception of the song in Briarbeard Tavern, where it was first performed, was good, and it proved adaptable enough to become a part of the common vocabulary by the end of summer.

The Lay of Lug was a heroic ballad, composed by Zampari at the behest of Lug and completed near the end of April, 1 VC. The somber verses recall the ill-fated journey of Lug to the Finger of Doom, the camaraderie of his friends, the tragic loss of his friend Lars, and the impossible love for the forest witch.

Like the companion drinking song, this one was picked up by the tavern folk, its popularity perhaps spurred by the reference to the death of Lars, a theme that resonated with many adventurers and long-time residents.

Lug's March was an instrumental piece composed by Zampari in early April, 1 VC, on commission from Lug. It is a powerful, military-style march, that was not especially popular but which was soon considered for adoption by the arch-duke as the anthem of Vaul, which did not help its popularity.

Harrowing is a simple fiddle-based ballad composed by Halfred the halfling on March 30, 1 VC in honor of the festival of the same name. Despite the simplicity of its construction, the fact that it made its debut during Vaul's first no-holds-barred drinking contest (winner: Orrin the Dwarf with 21 total tankards of ale drunk over the course of four and a half hours) practically ensured its popularity.
