[Completed] - Anwyn/Ruins - 13 March, 1 VC

#1 Post by Keehnelf »

This expedition traveled to the ruins east of town, and included the following characters:

Anwyn Slaen - female human (GTan_Baq)
Thisby Queller - female human (mister-kent)

It departed mid-day on March 13 of 1 VC, with the rain still coming down on the moor.

March 13, 1 VC - 4:50pm

The two women arrive at the knoll housing the ruins with the strange inscription after a bit of searching around similar-looking knolls. Otherwise, the trip to the ruins was uneventful.

Nearly three hours remain before dark.

Anwyn hands Thisby a piece of chalk, "Here, use this to mark trap triggers so we always know where they are." Anwyn lights a torch and stands ready with an eager smile on her face, "Best of luck to both of us, eh?"

May I just say, this is a wholly unexpected and very cool sort of adventure.

Just beyond the door that has been toppled to one side, the passage, made of brownish-yellow sandstone like the entryway outside, narrows abruptly to a five-foot width that will make traveling side-by-side (especially with a torch) difficult.

The narrowness is made even more dangerous by the presence of a steep slope in the passage, leading downward into the darkness.

The walls on either side are engraved with images of charging horses with riders, their lances almost brushing the ceiling of the hallway. They seem to be rushing pell-mell down, down.

The floor here is very slightly discolored and damp looking, likely from rainwater deflecting on to the stone outside the ruins and draining off into the slightly porous sandstone.

Thisby grins, now knowing her new friend's generous and ambitious spirit. She carefully marks the stone pressure trigger with large, down-pointing arrow marks on the wall, and then proceeds down the slope carefully.

"Hmm. It all leads down--maybe a tomb for some of these rider types?" she muses, gesturing to the murals.

"Do you want me to go first in case of traps? I'll need to hold the torch as well, I guess..."

So Thisby is going first, torch in one hand and chalk in the other? Or something else in the main hand?

Anwyn says, "Yes, go first please. I'm afraid I would dump us all in a pit for as little as I know about traps. Here is the torch." She passes the torch to Thisby. "Or I could carry the torch if you want."

Thisby takes the torch and waves it ahead in front of her as she leads Anwyn down the steep slope. "...Careful now..." she whispers, suddenly afraid that this downward trajectory will never end.

Anwyn follows Thisby down the slope hoping they don't fall into a pit.

Is it possible to examine for traps on this incline? If not, Thisby will check once they reach a level landing.

The slope is steep but not dangerously so by itself. Go ahead and make a check as you descend.

Thisby tries to pay close attention as she descends...

March 13, 1 VC - 5:00pm

The pair move carefully down the sloped passageway, and note that the charging-horsemen imagery continues and becomes more dynamic as the corridor descends into the depths of the hill.

Eventually, the end of the corridor comes into view, apparently a dead end with a large stylized sunburst surrounded by swords engraved into it. The pair has descended almost halfway down the tunnel's 30-foot length and there appear to be no exits at the far end.

Thisby sighs. "Okay...here we are. There's got to be something here...a trick or a switch or something." She taps on the wall and gently slides her gloved hand on the sunburst's engravings, still holding the torch aloft with her right hand.

This by continues her descent toward the bottom of the passage, intent on examining the sunburst more closely. A few feet down, there is an unpleasant "click" under Anwyn's feet as a pressure plate engages and they hear a trickling of liquid from above as oil comes spilling down the surface of the slope. At the same time, a solid scraping of stone and metal on stone accompanies a shift in the engraving below: the swords in the design have turned outward, their points facing toward the adventurers now struggling to maintain their footing on the slippery slope!

Dex checks for both of you, please!

March 13, 1 VC - 5:10pm

Anwyn manages to keep her footing and uses her free hands to stabilize herself against the wall, but is just too late in reaching out to help keep her companion from slipping down the incline toward the outstretched sword-points. Thisby slips at first, and then tumbles downward, struggling to slow her motion and regain her feet, but slams bodily into the end-wall of the passage, one of the swords jabbing into her shoulder as she lands.

Trap damage [1d4] = 3

Thankfully, she manages to keep her grip on the torch throughout the fall while the ground is covered with oil.

Thisby DEX Check [1d20] = 10

The trickle of oil slows, and now that they have time to compose themselves, both Anwyn and Thisby can navigate the corridor either up or down given suitable time (i.e. it will be tough if they're chased by spiders or something).

Anwyn: "Oh, LIGHT!!! THISBY!!! Are you alright? Say something!" Anwyn gingerly works her way down to her friend. "I need to get you out of here so we can bandage you up. Plus, it's getting close to dark. You can use the rest after this.

"So we know this trap is here, we just need to mark the place I stepped on so we don't do it again."
Anwyn begins looking at the floor where she was when the oil began pouring down on the floor trying to find what she stepped on.

searching for trigger:[1d6] = 1
If this is a success, Anwyn takes out her chalk and marks it.
I'm guessing a d6 is what I need to roll to check for this.
