Part 8: Once more unto the Barrowmaze

Can a thief backstab with a missile weapon? If so, if Milo is in a position to do so that's 14 to hit and 8 damage. If not, hopefully he can still get a position bonus if he managed to get behind any of the rats.

Yes, I have always played that if within 30' a missile attack can count as a backstab.

Bronn swings with his 2-handed sword connecting with the lead rat but it skates by with a wicked scratch on its flank.

Bronn Attack: [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20 Damage: [1d10] = 2

Simoni holds his mace tightly, waiting for any of the rats to make it past the first line of warriors. Torch in hand, Grigg searches through the pottery shards for any trinkets left behind. Without finding the trigger for the secret door, he searches the room, staying away from nibbling rat mouths trying to munch through the bars. Milo quietly nocks an arrow and looses it at a rat at the back of the pack. His shot impales the rat through the back of the neck and stops it in it's tracks. Peaches & Claude remain in the cell with Grigg, waiting for a moment to let loose her magic without fear of injuring the others. Pyrrhic swings his sword in a mighty arc towards the rats, severing another of the lead rats in twain.

With Milo unseen and Simoni in the second line, 2 rats focus on Bronn and 2 rats focus on Pyrrhic.

"ha, looks like meat is back on the menu!" Grigg encourages the fighters to get stuck in whilst using the flaming torch to discourage any rat from poking a snout through the portcullis.

Here, let me skewer this one for you."

With all the rats in melee combat, Milo steps quietly behind one of them and tries to hack it in the back.

Short sword (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

The hobbit is much clumsier with the sword than he was with the bow, however.

Bronn rounds on the rat he first swung at, striking at it again and splattering it.

With the rat's snapping at Bronn and Pyrrhic's heels but doing little else, Bronn swings again at the rat he sliced into previously and is greeted with the satisfaction of splattering the giant rodent against the nearby wall. Simoni leans inbetween Bronn and Pyrrhic, swinging his mace at one of the rats but the rodent proves more agile than it looks and is able to skitter away from the weapon. From behind the safety of the porticullis, Grigg pokes his torch out to deter any of the rats from getting too close to his position. Pyrrhic attempts to skewer one of the rats however is distracted by Grigg and misses.
"Ha, looks like meat is back on the menu!"

The rats around Pyrrhic turn tail and scurry away as fast they can while the remaining rat continues to bite at Bronn with little effect.

Simoni swings his mace at the remaining rat with better effect.

To hit: [1d20] = 17, damage with mace: [1d6] = 4

Milo takes another stab at a rat from behind. "Hold still, vermin!"

Short sword (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6
Attack bonus doesn't include +2 for attacking from behind.

Bronn holds his attack for fear of getting too close to Pyrrhic with the large sword however Simoni has not such qualms and reaches out again with his mace and smashes it down on the skull of the large rodent, ending it's biting forever.

The hallway is once again quite as the echoes from the battle slowly travel away.

Grigg

Grigg will raise the portcullis, stepping through after Peaches and Claude if they choose.

". Nothing but scraps in there and I couldn't make out the way of opening the secret door."Grigg says, ruefully looking at the room. He will step across the corridor, torch and sword in hand, look through the partially broken door into the room beyond.

From your position outside the door it is difficult to sort out the details. The door to the crypt itself lies in pieces on the floor. The walls are decorated with faint and vandalized frescos; you can not make out the details as to what the frescos depict. In the middle of the far wall, a disturbed skeleton rests on a stone slab.

"I hate rats," says Milo, stabbing a dead one for emphasis. "What's the point of a creature that doesn't have any treasure?"

"That room looks pretty well looted," he says of the crypt with vandalized frescoes. "Where to now?"

"Hey, waitaminute," says the hobbit. "There's something over there, by the slab, that might be interesting. Who, uh, wants to go into the room with me? To check it out?"

[Stirling]

Is the stone slab raised up or just district from the other flooring files?

"okay Milo, go check out old bone head over there"Grigg will step into the room with the halfling, indicating for others to follow.

[Zhym]

"What part of 'we' did you interpret as 'me?'" cracks Milo.

[Stirling]

Grigg has stepped into the room too, he has a torch to light the room and sword ready for trouble. I thought specifically you wanted to check out the skeleton.

The slab is raised up, about waist high for a normal human. Who is entering the room?
