2-Down the well, into UnderMountain (first trip)

#1 Post by Darkmane »

Durnan works the great block and tackle, lowering a huge rope down into the well, he offers harnesses to those who look a bit uncertain about holding onto a rope and being lowered down in. One by one, you grab onto the rope and hold on as it keeps going deeper and deeper. The light from the Yawning Portal holds out for perhaps 40 feet, until it can just be seen, but doesn't illuminate your surroundings well. Further and further the rope continues to drop, until finally it reaches the bottom.

You land softly onto a sand floor, setting up your lanterns you see that the room is roughly square, 40ftx40ft, and the sand floor goes all throughout the room. Here and there you can see bits of bone and torch ends peeking up from the sand. Along the walls are cracked and rusting shields, now useless, but you note that many of these bear various marks and heraldry - though none of them stand out as familiar to you.

There is but one exit from the room, a 10ftx10ft corridor, leading off into the dark. The air is a bit stale, but the temperature is cool and comfortable, like a cellar. The dungeon is mostly quiet, but now and again you hear a far away crack, or screech, or rattle.

Glimble pokes his nose out into the corridor with his lit lantern to see what he can see out in the corridor, saying nothing at all just observing. Then Glimble begins to attune his senses to the underground and using his gnome abilities to Determine the approximate depth underground, Determine approximate direction underground, Detect any grade or slope in the passage they are passing through.

Determine the approximate depth underground: [1d6] = 1
Determine approximate direction underground: [1d6] = 6
Detect any grade or slope in the passage they are passing through: [1d6] = 5

Tella - Mage

Tella will take a stick of chalk from her pack (the one w/o light) in hand. She'll draw a circle in the sand about 1' in diameter with three dots in the center forming a triangle. She'll also chalk mark the wall of the room they stand in with the same symbol. After placing a single copper piece on the ground she'll silently indicate she's ready to move into the corridor.

OCC: 1cp deducted.

OCC: Question: do the ropes that lowered us remain, or do we have to yell up the 'pipe' to get them to lower them?

Smart thinking to mark where we are and have been. ;)

After a few minutes, the rope does start to rise up (you will have to yell up the pipe to get them to lower it). It took quite a while for the rope to be lowered, so you won't want enemies on your trail as you're leaving. Meanwhile, Tella has marked out your location with chalk and left a copper piece on the ground.

Glimble inspects the passageway in front of you. Peering around the corner, he decides that corridor to heads off to the north, and it seems relatively flat and made of regular stone blocks. About 30 feet from the sandy floor entrance room, the corridor turns to the right. Heading back into the sandy floor room, Glimble and the dwarves decide you are about 130-150 feet under the Yawning Portal taproom floor.

Glimble will relay the above information to the non-dwarven/gnome companions.

"Hmm we appear to be quite far under the establishment we just left. I'll check ahead if one of my dwarven cousins will aid me in this task. Wise choice marking out path Tella." with that Glimble goes to move forward cautiously to see what options there are ahead and to see if he sees or hears anything moving ahead. "There might be a room here before the corridor turns to the right."

Relayed information:

Muriel follows with elven calm, sword out but held casually with the point low. The shorties had never gotten lost in a cave before; she's more concerned about trouble with the local fauna.

Tella - Mage

Aye Glimble, one thing to come in, another to get out. Nice to also know if anyone... anything else has been through. She will say with a wink. Tella will move up behind the group at about 7-10' keeping eyes and ears peeled for anything.

Thorax looks up the shaft and spits "cowards". Bending down he takes some sand in his hand. Smelling deeply the he allows the grains to fall while reciting a prayer. "Clangeddin bless us all on this test of our devotion and worth. Bring enemies uncounted down upon us this day that we may earn glory and revel in the song of battle." Brother Thorax then releases the rest of the sand over his head and shaking furiously loads his crossbow and heads out.

Dagmar as he comes down looks and says "Be careful who you call a coward" as he watches the rope go up. Seeing the chalk mark he nods

You investigate near where the hallway turns. There dont seem to be any rooms off the corridor yet. It bends and continues on. Would you like to head on? Thorax in the lead?

I will slow down and let an actual scout take lead. Additionally I would like to investigate the stonework. Perhaps there are hidden ways or other things to see.

Tella - Mage

At the turn Tella will stop and take one of the candles from her pack. She will mark the west wall at the turn with chalk and just below that in wax (using the candle like a crayon) with the same symbol she used in the first room (circle/three dots) with an arrow pointed to the south (toward the room they just came from). She'll put the sundry items in her pouch when done.

Glimble was the one leading unintentionally. He is but a priest of Gond and lets curiosity get the best of him at times.

With Glimble in the lead, and Thorax right behind him, you cautiously progress down the lone corridor. It twists back and forth with no side passages, and then it opens into a much larger corridor. This one is ~20 ft wide, and just as tall. Instead of the flat ceiling, this room has sculpted stone rising arched sections like the pallisade of a great church.

You continue down this corridor, after taking it all in, and it comes to an open, roughly octagonal, room, with two broad steps that descend down into the widening space croweded with a forest of stone pillars. Archways can be seen heading straight, and to your right and left, each of these exits has a few steps leading back up a few feet.

As the light of your lantern shines down amongst the pillars, suddenly you hear a scrambling noise and you light catches a glimpse of a lone goblin, who jumps up large eyes glinting red in the limited light, short sword in hand, and takes off running up the passageway to the right.

I don't know if we should pursue it as it very well is going back to a larger number of goblins and I don't want to run off into an ambush. What say you all rush off into an almost certain ambush or wait here ready for a fight and manage to prepare an ambush of our own?" Glimble says to the others. He then scratches his large nose and grabs out his little flail with the same free hand.

Thorax will shoot his crossbow at the fleeing Goblin. {15, hit AC 4 for 3 damage...sorry trying to figure out how to embed rolls from my phone still}.

Thorax will then begin reloading his crossbow. If the shot misses he will go pick up his bolt and search around the room for the best defensive position.

Your shot is just a bit too late (the sudden movement of the goblin surprised your group), and the bolt cracks against the stonework of the hall and bounces several times, skidding 20-30 feet down the hall behind the goblin. By the time you head over in that direction, the goblin has run off up that Southern hallway far enough to have escaped your light.

The bolt was damaged (I use a 50% check if a bolt or arrow is shot against stone, and a 25% chance of damage if a bolt or arrow is shot in a wooded environment, they can be repaired by a qualified fletcher in his shop). Peering down the hall with your infravision, you don't see the goblin anymore, when you head back into the Stone Column Forest room, and look around the columns, you don't find any enemies. The columns have nice reeded beading and some carvings near the top and bottom. They also play havoc with your eyes, sending crazy shadows moving in all directions around the room (between the columns, and the movements of your party). The space feels hard to defend with 4 entrances...

Several of you just heard a few creaking and clacking noises from the Northern passage out of this room (the opposite direction from where the goblin just ran).

"Alright clearly our little lanterns are not sufficient enough in this room." Glimble after saying this sets his lantern down puts his flail back through his belt and starts chanting and moving his hands then utters the final word of his chant and a ball of light casts into the center of the room illuminating much more than the lanterns can for the time being.

Casting Light.

That's an ungreased wagon or some bones on a walk, Muriel comments on the creaking from the north. Thorax, better get reloaded quick. She moves up a bit with drawn sword, hiding behind a pillar for a better look.
