Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Yup, evidence enough for a superstitious 13th century peasant.

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

He would have made some kind of comment to suggest that the evidence makes it very clear that it's a demonic infestation of some kind, without a clear argument.

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Simon frowns. “No, I’ve been in such a gloom since my return, and the climate so precarious, that I’ve not set foot once in the cottage. And my material circumstance has not lent itself to the procurement of any new items: it can be an expensive pastime, you know” He fiddles with the hem of his shir...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

The gardener politely declines Arduin's offer of a drink and remains impassive but deferential and agreeable as Arduin offers his aspirational fibs about his background and interests. He seems eager to have help in resolving this issue, and from Arduin's estimation, such as it is--and having no Herb...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Simon calls for his manservant, who after a few minutes ushers the gardener into his study. The man is graying, perhaps fiftyish, with a shorty patchy beard and bright, twinkling brown eyes in a heavily tanned and lined face. He doffs his white linen cap and stands, awkwardly, before Arduin and Gert...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Whom would Arduin like to interview first? The gardener, the manservant, or the cook?

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Somehow, to Gertrude's incredulity, Arduin manages to inflect his response to Simon with just enough affronted politeness that Simon hesitates, doubting whether he might not have been uncouth in his response to Arduin. He takes a long, quiet moment to compose himself, and then nods. "Well, as I...

1d10+3 in this case (actually +4 since your etiquette specialization is in nobility)

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Simon is irritated that this is still a topic of conversation, having been lulled by Gertrude's intervention into believing that Arduin would finally cease his pressure. He listens to Arduin through his short monologue, however, profoundly skeptical but still keenly aware that there might be somethi...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

I like how she's threading that needle. Those are all good points (though it hadn't even occurred to Simon to consider such a thing, I could imagine him eventually leaning in that direction if pushed too far where he doesn't want to be).

Re: Chapter 2: The Woes of Reuna

Ferd , sensing trouble from the scroll, shifts his target priority to the leader and fires at it, instead. Shortbow attack: [1d20+1]=15+1=16 Damage: [1d6]=1 Gerd will stay close to his brother and attack any target that comes close enough, but he's feeling less confident about the situation by the ...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Spellcasting is generally quite obvious unless you’re trying to mute/still your casting, which makes the spell more difficult. Arduin’s situation is actually a little more complex though, because he has to sing or perform music in order to enact his magic: without that, it just doesn’t work. That c...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

I was forgetting Arduin’s noble background, so my error on not providing context through that lens. Gertrude’s read on Simon is more or less correct. He may be stubborn, but it’s more likely that it’s his pride causing it than a desire to hide anything—and pressing someone in a situation like this ...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

After Gertrude's performance, Simon seems mollified but still suspicious of Arduin and a bit thorny of temper. "Well, I don't really know. All of my most unusual items are stored away there, and since the Succession challenge started, I was rarely back here, and wouldn't have considered digging...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

Gertrude’s read on Simon based on her knowledge of him is that his pride as a nobleman is wrapped up in this—that he’s already embarrassed at the condition of his estate and the need to ask for help, and so won’t tolerate having demands made of him in his home. Gertrude has only been here a couple ...

Re: Summer 1221 - The Luminous Codex [Arduin]

A shadow passes over Simon's face as he absorbs Arduin's request. "No," he says shortly. "I don't think I will. If that's the price of your assistance here, I might advise you to be on your way."

He turns away to gaze out the garden window, brooding.
